Flowers and Mushrooms takes readers inside the rich and diverse symbolism of its eponymous subjects. Flowers have at times stood for freshness and fertility, transience and death. In addition to its ubiquitous and much-maligned image as a hallucinogen, the mushroom has throughout history signified health and life and served as an important symbol within religious ritual. In recent years though, flowers and mushrooms have become a focus in contemporary art, with artists manipulating the many clichés that surround them and adapting their representation to produce new and unexpected layers of meaning, from social criticism to feminism and the conceptual framework of the erotic.

Inspired by the Ed Ruscha series ''Coloured People'', Japanese photographer Takashi Homma’s visited forests on three continents to search for radioactive mushrooms. The mushrooms—gathered in Scandinavia, Fukushima, Chernobyl and Stony Point—were photographed in front of a white background, with occasional photographs from the forests and views that Homma encountered during his hunt. The forest is one of earth’s most primal habitats; in the modern age, it is us who maintain and care for the forest.

Summary:
In this book, Nicholas P. Money tells the utterly fascinating story of mushrooms and the ways we have interacted with these fungi throughout history. Whether they have populated the landscapes of fairytales, lent splendid umami to our dishes, or steered us into deep hallucinations, mushrooms have affected humanity from the earliest beginnings of our species. As Money explains, mushrooms are not self-contained organisms like animals and plants. Rather, they are the fruiting bodies of large—sometimes extremely large—colonies of mycelial threads that spread underground and permeate rotting vegetation. Because these colonies decompose organic matter, they are of extraordinary ecological value and have a huge effect on the health of the environment. This book takes us on a tour of the cultural and scientific importance of mushrooms, from the enchanted forests of folklore to the role of these fungi in sustaining life on earth.

Summary:
Published on the occasion of the Tokyo Art Book Fair 2023, which included a section dedicated to publishers and artists from Nordic countries, Takashi Homma presents his new photobook "Islands, islets, and their mushrooms" in collaboration with Tove Jansson translator Keiko Morishita. Homma’s photographs capture the beauty of the islands and the sea between them, but also offer a brief photographic account of the various mushrooms that grow in the region. The photographs are interspersed with personal essays written by Keiko Morishita (who served as Homma’s coordinator) about his own experiences on the islands and the lives of the people who live there.

Summary:
Photographer Takashi Homma takes us on a journey deep into densely wooded areas in search of the many different types of fungus that grow there. More the collection of a curious wanderer than a serious hobbyist, the unidentified mushrooms are photographed against sterile white backgrounds as if recently plucked from the forest floor, with soil, bark and even small creatures still attached. The fungal portraits are interspersed with images of the forest itself, as if providing a natural context – a sense of actually being there – with surroundings of lichen covered trees, dense leafage, and the natural interplay of shadow and light.
