- This group of drawings and prints for Château de Marcoussis (designed by Charles Rohault de Fleury in 1862-1863), and for later additions to the château by Rohault de Fleury and other architects, is composed mostly of design development and presentation drawings and transfer lithographs - mainly plans and elevations. Three wash drawings and 13 transfer lithographs, some coloured with wash, are for the château as constructed and are mostly dated June 1863 (drawings: DR1986:0380, DR1986:0382, DR1986:0383; transfer lithographs: DR1986:0387 - DR1986:0389, DR1986:0397 - DR1986:0407). Drawings for two unexecuted designs for the château are included: the first is dated 3 May 1862, and possibly 23 May 1862 (DR1986:0379, DR1986:0393, DR1986:394), and the second 15 May 1862 (DR1986:0395 and DR1986:0396). Three untitled drawings may also be designs for Château Marcoussis, although the inscription "1er projet" in conjunction with the later date of April 1863, suggests that they are perhaps for a different unidentified project (DR1986:0390 - DR1986:0392). Also included are a proposal for a winter garden for Château Marcoussis designed by Geriche (DR1986:0384), an unattributed project for modifications to the winter garden (DR1986:0385), and plans for an unidentified house (DR1986:0412 and DR1986:0413). Folder DR1986:0386 and mounts DR1986:0410 and DR1986:0411 were acquired with this group. All three objects are inscribed with titles, and those on the mounts indicate the existence of two drawings that were not acquired with the group: "Marcoussis / Mr le Mis de la Baume" (DR1986:0410) and "Escalier au tourelle / (projet) / 1900" (DR1986:0411). Charles Rohault de Fleury's sustained involvement with the design of opera houses began with his appointment in 1846 as official architect of the existing Salle Le Pelletier, home to the *Paris Opera, and continued until an open competition was called in 1860 (Charles Garnier won this competition). During this period Rohault de Fleury submitted numerous proposals to replace theprovisional Salle Le Pelletier with a structure more appropriate to the grandeur and importance of France's national opera company. The CCA collection contains four projects related to his work for the Paris opera: two early projects (1846 and 1847) and one later one (1859) for a newopera house, and a portfolio of lithographs and drawings related to alterations and repairs to Salle Le Pelletier (1850-1854). The collection also includes Charles' earliest theatre project, a comprehensive plan for an opera house and surrounding infrastructure for the Theatre Royal Italien opera company (1838-1840), and an album containing drawings and prints of antique and contemporary theatres (1839-1854?). Charles' first project was for the Theatre Royal Italien opera company whose previous home, the Salle Favart, had burned down on the night of January 14 1838. The CCA collection contains an album of presentation drawings for a new theatre located on rue de la Paix with boutiques in the adjacent 'passages' (DR1974:0002:019:001-023). A second album consists of site plans including proposed 'maisons à loyers' (apartment buildings) and documents relating to the cost estimates and rental income for the entire project (DR1974:0002:036:001-016). The architectural style and interior arrangement of the theatre is heavily indebted to Francois Debret's Salle Le Pelletier. Charles' originality lies more in his conception of the social and economic role of the theatre in relation and integration, to its surrounding urban fabric. An explanation of the entire Theatre Royal Italien project, and Charles' role as architect in it, is found in two proposal letters (located in the Avery Library, Columbia University, NY) written by the entrepreneur Eugene Lecomte to the Minister of the Interior, Comte Duchatel, on May 15 and October 31 1839 (1). Charles' album of drawings at the CCA for the theatre and some of the cost and rental estimates are probably presentation copies directly related to the first letter, and most likely submitted to the Minister of the Interior. Charles' project was never executed, and the Italian opera company eventualy found a permanent home in the existing Salle Ventadour (1841). However, the inclusive nature of the Théâtre Royal Italien proposal, with its stress on urban development and contextuality, continued to play a seminal role in his later Paris Opera projects. Upon replacing Francois Debret as architect of Salle Le Pelletier in 1846, Charles proposed nine possible locations (site plans) for a new opera house for the Paris Opera (*Academie Royale de Musique) and, in the following year (1847) prepared a portfolio of drawings for the actual structure with an accompanying seven-page manuscript describing the project. Although executed in successive years, the site plans and 1847 drawings are conceptually related. Both components were undertaken in response to offical interest in a public competition that was never implemented (2)(3). The CCA has two sets of the nine site plans proposed in 1846 (DR1974:0002:036:001-016), one containing transfer lithographed site plans with a written analysis and cost estimate for each of the proposed locations, and the other with only the site plans (similar sets are located in the 'Archives Nationales' in France). The manuscript is both an indepth review of the requirements for a national opera house and a guide to his portfolio of drawings. Charles' conception and design continued to be strongly influenced by Debret's Salle Lepelletier, as well as his own Théâtre Italien project, and various antique and contemporary opera houses and theatres. Many of the French and Italian sources mentioned in the manuscript are collected in an album (DR1974:0002:010:001-048) as references for his own designs (4). As official architect of Salle Le pelletier, Charles was also responsible for repairs, restorations, and alterations to the existing structure. The drawings and transfer lithographs in the CCA collection (DR1974:0002:036:001-016) are primarily dated 1854, and relate to documented repair and restoration projects undertaken during this period (5)(6). The CCA collection has the presentation drawings and lithographs for the later 1859 project (DR1974:0002:027:001-027) for the Paris opera (*Theatre Imperiale de l'opera) that were sent to Achille Fould, the Minister of State. This project is probably a counterpart to a similiar one that he submitted to the Prefect of the Seine, Baron Haussmann, in the same year (7). Site plans show the opera house on an irregular polygonal site facing Boulevard des Capucines. The placement of the 'maisons à loyers' on the rear of the site reflects Charles' continued emphasis on integrating his opera projects into the surrounding urban context. In 1859, it appeared that Charles was favoured to build the new opera house. But late in the following year, a public competition was called in which Charles Garnier emerged as the victor. Faquet-Lemaitre, two [?] apartment houses and three private houses in Paris, a house for Mme de Lescure, Royan, and the Administration générale des omnibus office building, Paris. Both the drawings for the house in Cologne and the three variant projects for a hothouse are probably presentation drawings. There are contract drawings, probably the architect's copies, for apartment houses for M. Piet and M. Le Comte, and houses for M. Moreau Chaslon, Mme la comtesse de Lubersac, Mme de Lescure and M. Waresquiel. A sheet of cost calculations attached to a preliminary site plan, are probably for M. Waresquiel's house. The first plan for Mme la comtesse de Lubersac's house (DR1974:0002:002:084), and the plans for M. Waresquiel's house are annotated with the functions of the rooms. The architect's copies of the drawings for the country house in Royan, given to the client by the architect, include drawings of the foundations and framework, larger scale elevational and sectional details of the architectural elements, profiles and joinery details. The function within the design process of the prints for the commercial building for the Administration Générale de Omnibus is unclear. The principal elevation (DR1974:0002:002:020) is rendered in watercolour, suggesting it may be a presentation print. The other prints for this building exhibit the same degree of finish as the contract drawings in this album, but the absence of the client's and contractor's signatures and the revision attached to DR1974:0002:002:022 suggests they may be part of the design development stage of the project. Also included in the album is a sheet of preliminary sketches for a tomb for Daguerre (not the photographer) and two small unbound sheets of sketches for unidentified projects (DR1974:0002:002:048 and DR1974:0002:002:028).

Both the drawings for the house in Cologne and the three variant projects for a hothouse are probably presentation drawings. There are contract drawings, probably the architect's copies, for apartment houses for M. Piet and M. Le Comte, and houses for M. Moreau Chaslon, Mme la comtesse de Lubersac, Mme de Lescure and M. Waresquiel. A sheet of cost calculations attached to a preliminary site plan, are probably for M. Waresquiel's house. The first plan for Mme la comtesse de Lubersac's house (DR1974:0002:002:084), and the plans for M. Waresquiel's house are annotated with the functions of the rooms. The architect's copies of the drawings for the country house in Royan, given to the client by the architect, include drawings of the foundations and framework, larger scale elevational and sectional details of the architectural elements, profiles and joinery details. The function within the design process of the prints for the commercial building for the Administration Générale de Omnibus is unclear. The principal elevation (DR1974:0002:002:020) is rendered in watercolour, suggesting it may be a presentation print. The other prints for this building exhibit the same degree of finish as the contract drawings in this album, but the absence of the client's and contractor's signatures and the revision attached to DR1974:0002:002:022 suggests they may be part of the design development stage of the project. Also included in the album is a sheet of preliminary sketches for a tomb for Daguerre (not the photographer) and two small unbound sheets of sketches for unidentified projects (DR1974:0002:002:048 and DR1974:0002:002:028).

The two other Mines Field clippings announce the completion of an aircraft factory at Mines Field and the completion of the municipal airport within thirty days. The unrelated clipping announces a model airport to be built in Chicago. Also included with these documents are a copy of the resolution made by the Municipal Art Commission recommending Wright's design to the Airport Committee and an envelope addressed to Clifford Henderson, Director of Municipal Airports, City of Los Angeles.

The project series documents the Punt en Komma social housing project in The Hague, The Netherlands, with some materials related to the Urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5, Schilderswijk-West. While the records were held in the office’s archives the urban plan for Deelgebied Zone 5 was assigned the number 30/80 and Punt en Komma was assigned the number 30/80 A/B (Punt (A) and Komma (B)). The office assigned the date 1984 for this project. In the mid to late1970s The Hague underwent an urban renewal program and in 1980 Adri Duivesteijn became the alderman responsible for this program. Dissatisfied with the results, in the early to mid-1980s Duivesteijn began a campaign to look at urban renewal as a cultural approach, and was interested in the participatory process that Siza incorporated for the Serviço Ambulatório de Apoio Local (SAAL) in Portugal and the Berlin projects submitted to the International Architectural Exhibition Berlin competition (International Bauaustellung, IBA, circa 1979-1987). After taking a trip to Portugal, Duivesteijn invited Siza to speak with residents of Schilderswijk. The urban plan for Schilderswijk was the first part of a redevelopment plan for the 19th century district and included two four story blocks of 106 apartments, named Punt en Komma. Schilderswijk is in the centre of The Hague and is nearby the Haag Spoor train station. The residents are made up of multi-ethnic communities and included immigrants from Turkey, Morocco, Tunisia, and Portugal. Similarly to the Berlin projects, Siza was faced with cultural tensions between the residents of the area. The urban plan was to take into account the preservation of the neighborhood's identity while accounting for the changes brought on by multi-ethnic communities. As with the SAAL and Berlin projects there was an element of participation from the residents and included the collaboration of a residents association. In the “Plan of Zone 5 of Schilderswijk Centrum…”, found in this project series [AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.1, AP178.S1.1984.PR02.024.2], it is outlined that meetings were periodically held with technicians appointed by the Department of Urban Planning and Housing of The Hague, the Housing Cooperative, and each of the designers. Siza’s design for Punt en Komma incorporated elements prevalent in Dutch architecture such as the Haagse Portiek. However, he also included components in his design which accounted for the needs of residents living there at the time. One feature which gained much attention was the incorporation of sliding doors in the apartments. Siza included these doors in his design in consideration of the cultural practices of Muslim families. Documenting this project series are drawings, photographic materials, and textual documentation. Among the drawings are plans, elevations, sections, and details, as well as axonometric drawings, such as the proposed design for Deelgebied zone 5 (including Punt en Komma) and drawings of the Haagse Porteik. Photographic materials document both Duivesteijn’s trip to Portugal and Siza’s first trip to The Hague and include photographs, negatives, and slides of the built project, as well as slides of drawings. Note that the photographic materials include photographs related to the housing and shopping complex in Schilderswijk. Textual documentation includes brochures regarding rent increases, a copy of “Stadsvernieuwing als Kulturele Aktiviteit” by Duivesteijn, and information booklets for the residents. Also included are minutes of meeting and correspondence from the Woningbouwvereniging’s-Gravenhage. Among the correspondence are letters regarding construction costs, including a letter from Siza to the local architectural firm Architectengemeenschap Van den Broek en Bakema explaining that he does not wish to modify the detail he specified for the lintels of the Punt building.
