Summary:
In the age of the Anthropocene, in which humanity acts on cycles and systems with all its power and capital, architecture and energy together mean more than operational or embodied energy, active and passive solutions. In the face of the climate crisis, beyond the phase-out of fossil fuels, architecture has a mediating role; it is about socio-cultural rethinking. Disquietude addresses the entanglement between architecture and energy in the 20th century, using Portugal as an example. Featuring different local Portuguese voices, the publication identifies the potential for a transition that could be local, sustainable, diverse, and just and be meaningful also in an international perspective.

Summary:
The publication Arts for Living takes a close look at the Abrons Arts Center, a community-art facility on the Lower East Side of New York, as a case study for architecture designed to address issues of public space and community life. The Center was built during the 1970's fiscal crisis and designed by Prentice, Chan and Ohlhausen as a cultural institution with new educational facilities intended to enable, foster, and serve the everyday activities of the local low-income population. The notions of public architecture and architecture education will be framed through three topics: the architecture and urban space of the Abrons Arts Center itself; the programming and activities at the Abrons Arts Center within the context of architectural education; and a larger survey of the environment of the Lower East Side, in terms of its cultural, social, and political context.

Summary:
The artists Cy Twombly and Sally Mann may at first seem an unlikely pairing. He was a leading contemporary artist who defied easy categorization, a painter and sculptor whose enigmatic work often referenced mythology and epic poetry. She is a photographer with an uncanny ability to tap raw human emotion, whether depicting members of her family or the landscape of the American South. What they had in common was place—both grew up in rural Lexington, Virginia, where Twombly kept a studio and produced some of his most important work until his death in 2011, and where Mann has lived and worked all her life.Over the course of several years, Mann photographed inside Twombly’s studio. The result is a rare insider’s view of Twombly’s process—we sense him in the room at every turn, although he is always just beyond the frame—and a poetic dialogue between two artistic visions.

The year is 1989 and twenty-three-year-old Doucet is flying to France to meet with a soldier. He’s a man she only knows through their mail correspondence, a common enough reality of the zine era, when comics were mailed from cartoonist to reader and close relationships were formed. Time is not on their side—the soldier is just on furlough for a few days—but the two make the most of their visit and discuss future plans, maybe even Christmas in Doucet’s city, Montreal.

Summary:
This book explores the concept of co-dividuality, an architecture that expresses a new response to joint living in the age of postindividualism, social media, and the sharing economy. The focus lies on current experimentation in Japanese architecture and presents thematic homes with shared spaces designed as a result of warm, simple, fun and contemporary design reflections. In addition to their private room, the co-tenants have large common areas where they can practice urban farming, create a start-up, cook together, or experience new spatial ergonomics. The book offers an overview not only on domestic space but also on projects characterized by a multifarious mix between public and private spheres. 'What Is Co-dividuality?' reflects on how we might want to live tomorrow. The book includes projects by Kengo Kuma, Kazuyo Sejima, Ryue Nishizawa, Shigeru Ban, Sou Fujimoto, Satoko Shinohara, Ayano Uchimura, Taichi Kuma, Junya Ishigami, Suppose Design, Naruse Inokuma, and Masuda + Otsubo, among others.

Summary:
This important book tells the multifaceted story of humankind’s relationship with flooding, a story that is permeated with a history of both worship and fear. Modern water engineering has turned plains and valleys into fully inhabitable environments. At the same time, those environments have become highly vulnerable to climate change. In efforts to prevent future floods, countries are rediscovering adaptation strategies: making room for flooding, redistributing risks and reconsidering the use and legal status of floodplains. Through historical investigations and six contemporary projects implemented in four European countries, "Floodscapes" illustrates how flood-mitigation measures can be embedded in local space and culture. Merged with landscape development, agriculture, recreation, nature, and even urban growth, river management becomes a design issue, giving landscape architects and urban designers a prominent role in future transitions. This book provides an in-depth look into the most common natural disaster in the US, and the innovative solutions that have arisen.
