Summary:

Summary:
On Line explores the radical evolution of drawing that took place during the last century and through to the present day, as numerous artists subjected the traditional concepts of the medium to a critical examination. Published to accompany an exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the catalog presents a discursive history of mark-making through nearly 250 works by 100 artists, including Aleksandr Rodchenko, Alexander Calder, Karel Malich, Eva Hesse, Anna Maria Maiolino, Richard Tuttle, Mona Hatoum and Monika Grzymala among many others. Essays by the curators illuminate individual practices and offer focused examinations of broader themes, such as the exploration of line by the avant-garde, and the relationship between drawing and dance.

Summary:
Mathieu's follows an expert hired to catalogue a vast, half-ruined museum; he encounters inhabitants living in the lower reaches who have no understanding of the location or its contents. A Kafkaesque catalogue of paradoxes ensues: paintings kept in the dark so the light will not damage the colors that no one will ever see; statues restored then broken then defaced to keep their states "authentic"; a frame maker who considers his contribution the true definition of painting. As years go by, the expert becomes old and unkempt as further and further levels of absurdist cataloguing are discovered. Eventually, he discovers the deepest layers and the secret behind the Mona Lisa, even as he passes his journal on to another "expert" for a continuation of these meaningless attempts to quantify art without perceiving its beauty.

Parachute was founded in 1975 by Chantal Pontbriand and France Morin. Following the previous three Parachute volumes, this last title of the Parachute anthology focuses on painting, sculpture, installation and architecture. These topics are approached from several perspectives: from new theories of aesthetic production, especially painting, to the expansion of the art world to other artistic territories during the 1980s and 1990s (Russia and South America, for instance), from the "lessons" of postmodernism to the proliferation of installation art. The essays discuss works by artists such as Lothar Baumgarten, Mona Hatoum, Guillermo Kuitca, Louise Lawler, Reinhard Mucha, Jackson Pollock, Robert Ryman, Michael Snow and Sots Art artists, and include two particularly seminal artist's essays: Dan Graham on Gordon Matta-Clark, and Jeff Wall on Édouard Manet.

Summary:
This publication documents a series of workshops and conversations hosted by Wendy’s Subway and organized by English-Arabic bilingual magazine Makzhin editor Mirene Arsanios on questions of formative literary influences. Three female Arab writers were invited to choose and discuss ten books that shaped their understanding of poetry and translation. Notwithstanding the difficulty of the task, Marwa Helal, Mona Kareem, and Iman Mersal played along, selecting—among a sea of influences—authors and/or translators whose works were key to their own practice, and to their embodied understanding of what it means to write in Arabic from a female perspective. Asking what kind of writings are/were available to them, and which books or translations unseated their understanding of the world, Helal, Kareem, and Mersal discuss writing within the diaspora and across borders, radical publishing and translation networks, cultural and linguistic translation, vernacular language as resistance, and more.

Summary:
Meret Oppenheim (1913–85) is one of the most recognized 20th-century artists. This catalog examines her entire career, from the 1930s to the late works, revealing the creative network of relationships she nurtured with her peers during her time in Paris. Man Ray, Marcel Duchamp, Max Ernst, Alberto Giacometti, Hans Arp and others are documented in this publication through some of their most significant works. What emerges is the extent to which the artist influenced the Surrealist vocabulary in which objects turn into fetishes, oneiric and erotic fantasies intermingle and women are seen as innocent or evil, enveloped in mysterious nature. Her works have made her a key figure for many generations of artists, as can be seen here through parallels with creations by Daniel Spoerri, Birgit Jürgenssen, Robert Gober and Mona Hatoum.

Summary:
Mona Hatoum (born 1952) has established herself as a truly transnational artist: born in Beirut, and working in Berlin and London, her multimedia work explores the dangers inherent to the borderlines between nation and body. This multi-authored and richly illustrated publication reveals all of the different facets of the artist's career, from her overtly political performances of the 1980s to her later installations, photographs, sculptures and videos that examine the human body as a metaphor for oppression in a broader sense. Hatoum's unusual blend of Surrealism and Minimalism both seduces and repels: her endoscopic videos of her organs, blood-red lights, the crackling electricity of wired furniture and glowing globes, a variety of cages and the murderous possibilities of kitchen utensils present us with an alienating intimacy that questions our relationship to our bodies and to the world.
