In the summer of 1970, the Museum of Modern Art in New York mounted the now legendary exhibition 'Information', one of the first surveys of conceptual art. Conceived by MoMA’s curator Kynaston McShine as an 'international report' on contemporary trends, the show and attendant catalog together assembled the work of more than 150 artists from 15 countries to explore the parameters and possibilities of the emerging art practices of the era. This facsimile edition of the original 'Information' catalog, which has long been out of print, invites reengagement with MoMA’s landmark exhibition while illuminating the early history of conceptual art.

Summary:
Balancing environmental, social, economic, and aesthetic concerns, sustainable design has the potential to transform everyday life and is already reshaping the fields of architecture and product design. "Beyond green : toward a sustainable art" explores the influence of this design philosophy on an emerging generation of international artists who combine a fresh aesthetic sensibility with a constructively critical approach to the production, dissemination, and display of art. This catalogue's exhibition includes existing works, commissions, and previously presented work that has been “recycled,” spotlighting ways in which artists are building paths to new forms of practice. The exhibition is curated by Stephanie Smith, curator at the Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago, and is co-organized by iCI and the Smart Museum. It is accompanied by an illustrated catalogue with artist interviews, and essays by Smith and by design historian Victor Margolin.

Summary:
During the 1960s, as Western notions of endless progress and growth gave way to concerns over industrial pollution, resource depletion and ecological limits, attitudes toward the environment became social, political and ideological. Published to accompany the first expansive survey of the history of environmental thinking in architecture, ''Emerging ecologies: Architecture and the rise of environmentalism'' looks at the role architects have played in defining our understanding of ''nature'' and the ''environment,'' specifically during the rise of environmental discourse. The illustrated publication presents over 45 architectural contributions—from Eleanor Raymond and Mária Telkes’ groundbreaking work on solar houses to Buckminster Fuller’s world resource management system and the environmental symbolism of Emilio Ambasz—to explore the role designers played in both promoting ecological concerns and in outlining the very terms of this nascent field. Through an introductory essay by curator Carson Chan and brief texts on each of the featured projects, ''Emerging ecologies'' documents the proximity between ecology, design and statecraft, allowing readers to take stock of historic milestones as architecture confronts today’s climate emergencies.

Summary:
From 1845 to 1862, the Boston partnership of Albert Sands Southworth and Josiah Johnson Hawes maintained the most celebrated photography studio in the United States. Taking as their subjects both the greatest personalities of the day and the natural spectacles of the American landscape, such as Niagara Falls, Southworth & Hawes elevated the new medium of daguerreotype photography to the level of art. Transcending the mere recording of factual detail, their daguerreotypes reflect a quintessentially American aesthetic and embody an emerging national culture and spirit. "Young America" features full-scale color reproductions of all plates in the exhibition as well as 2,000 additional black-and-white illustrations. It includes a critical analysis of the historical and cultural importance of the work of Southworth & Hawes, with original texts by Brian Wallis, ICP Director of Exhibitions and Chief Curator, and Grant Romer, Director of the Advanced Program in Photography Conservation at George Eastman House, among other scholars. Appendices include a chronology, an annotated bibliography, an exploration of the daguerreotype process, brief biographies of the sitters, and a Southworth & Hawes family genealogy, making the catalogue an invaluable resource for researchers as well as general readers. The book includes an annotated bibliography, exhibition checklist and chronology.
