The Richard Henriquez fonds, 1962-2002, documents the professional career of architect and urban designer Richard G. Henriquez. More specifically, materials in this collection relate to Henriquez’s architectural training at the University of Manitoba, his early career as an architect in Jamaica, and his career as a principal at the architectural firm Henriquez Partners Architects. The fonds also includes Henriquez’s independent and unexecuted projects as well as projects that he completed in collaboration with other architects or architectural firms. These built projects vary in scope and size and include residential, academic, commercial, institutional, religious and cultural buildings.
Approximately 150 of Henriquez’s built projects are represented in this fonds. This fonds contains an extensive number of architectural drawings, consisting of information/reference drawings, preliminary design sketches, presentation drawings, design development drawings, working drawings, consultant drawings and post-construction drawings. Architectural, electrical, structural and mechanical blueprints, zoning maps, and road layouts are also included in this collection.
Presentation panels in this fonds display drawings and photographs of built projects from various perspectives and also include award boards of prize-winning buildings such as the Lee Commercial Building, Gaslight Square, and the False Creek Co-op Housing. Photographs in this fonds consist of architectural models, construction sites (including aerial views), and provide interior and exterior views of buildings.
Textual records comprise of general, official and consultant correspondence, client’s program information, data files, cost estimates, budgets, certificates for payment, transmittals, supervision specification files, tenders, contracts, checklists, building permits, site meeting minutes, inspection reports, surveys and analysis reports, news clippings, promotional materials and publications.
Artefacts in this fonds consist of presentation drawings of the Firehall #22 in a glass wheel and 5 offset printing plates of various built projects.

Note biographique:
Richard G. Henriquez was born on February 5, 1941, in Annotta Bay, Jamaica. In 1964, he received a Bachelor of Architecture from the University of Manitoba and was awarded the University of Manitoba Design Prize. Two years later, Henriquez was awarded an Architectural Thesis prize, an R.A.I.C Gold Medal, and a Pilkington Travelling Scholarship Prize. After completing his studies, Henriquez returned to Jamaica, where he began his career as an architect at the architectural firm McMorris Sibley & Robinson Architects in Kingston. In 1967, he completed a master’s degree in architecture and urban design at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1968, Henriquez moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he worked as a project architect for the architectural firm Rhone & Iredale.
In 1969, Henriquez partnered with colleague Robert Todd and established the architectural firm, Henriquez & Todd Architects. As Henriquez & Todd Architects, Henriquez designed a number of award-winning restoration and built projects in Vancouver. These projects include the Lee Commercial Building (1973), Gaslight Square (1975), Sonner House in Bowen Island (1975), and the False Creek Housing Cooperative (1977). The Lee Commercial Building and False Creek Housing Cooperative both earned a RAIC Festival of Architecture Design Award of Merit in 1980; in that same year, the Gaslight Square and Sonner House were both awarded the Festival of Architecture Design Honour Award.
In 1977, the firm was re-established and renamed, Henriquez Associates Architects, Urban Designers (1977-1979). In 1979, the firm’s name was changed to Henriquez & Partners Architects, Urban Designers. Henriquez’s architectural firm is now known as Henriquez Partners Architects. In the early 1980s, Henriquez also established a consulting firm, Henriquez Production Ltd, which is still presently active.
Other built projects that earned Henriquez awards include the Sylvia Tower in Vancouver (1984), the Aaron Residence in London, Ontario (1986), the Jericho Circle House in Vancouver (1986), the Sinclair Centre in Vancouver (1986), the Presidio Condominium Tower in Vancouver (1989), Trent University’s Environmental Sciences Building in Peterborough, Ontario (1988), the Justice Institute of British Columbia in New Westminster (1992), the Capilano University Library in North Vancouver (1993), the Thompson Community Centre in Richmond (1995), Burnaby Firehall No.5 in Burnaby (1998), and the New Westminster Firehall No. 4 in New Westminster (1998).
In the course of his career, Richard Henriquez collaborated with many architects and architectural firms, including Toby Russel Buckwell Architects, Laszlo Nemeth Associates, IBI Group Architects, and landscape architect, Cornélia Hann Oberlander.
Henriquez taught at the University of British Columbia’s School of Architecture from 1968 to 1970. He also served as critic and guest lecturer at several schools of architecture in Canada. In 1983, he was elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC). He is also a member of several professional associations, notably the Architectural Institute of British Columbia, the Ontario Association of Architects, and the Alberta Association of Architects.
In 1994, an exhibition entitled “Richard Henriquez: Memory Theatre,” was organized by the Canadian Centre for Architecture and the Vancouver Art Gallery. The exhibition was mounted in Montreal, Ottawa and Vancouver. In 2005, Henriquez received the prestigious Gold Medal from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) for his architectural contributions in Canada, and in 2013, he received the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC) Lifetime Achievement Award.

- The Richard Henriquez fonds was donated to the Canadian Centre for Architecture by Richard Henriquez on December 13, 1994. Subsequent additions were received on December 11, 1995, December 15, 1996, December 15, 1997, December 7, 1999, and December 13, 2002. The fonds was transferred to the CCA from Vancouver, British Columbia.
