Résumé:

Until very recently, Canadians have ignored the history of their cities, thinking of themselves as pioneers in a wilderness frontier. In the past few years, however, Canadian historians have realized that the city was a major force in the country's history. The result of this new direction among scholars is that the study of the Canadian city has become one of the most exciting fields of research in recent years. This collection of essays, which contains several previously unpublished essays, brings together the best and most representative work to date on early urban development, metropolitan growth, the urban environment, urban society, urban reform, and methodology. The editors have contributed a general introductory essay, introductions to the sections of the book, and a select bibliography of recent work in Canadian urban history.
