Other than in the case of Berlin, Vienna has never been seen as a theatre of politicized architectural discourse during the Cold War. Yet each of the Allied forces occupying Austria following Nazi Germany's capitulation in 1945 established its own culture program as part of its policy. These also included British, French, American, and Soviet architecture exhibitions, which thus became a backdrop for cultural, ideological, and technological transfer. The impact of these programs on Austria's post-war architecture scene is hardly known today. Published in conjunction with a major exhibition at Architekturzentrum Wien, "Cold War and Architecture" now fills this gap. It is a plea to thoroughly review the historical narrative from a national and an architectural perspective. Monika Platzer for the first time contextualizes building activity and its protagonists within the country's cultural debates during the Cold War. She demonstrates to what extent allied occupation forged architectural decision making. Her focus is on previously ignored primary and secondary sources from which a deep, multifaceted picture of post-war modernism in Austria emerges.
