"The environmental consequences of the industrial revolution caused mounting concern in the late 19th century. Public health and housing reform were followed by controls over the use and development of land, characterised as 'town-planning' in the early 1900s. The best-known pioneer of planning was Sir Raymond Unwin (1863-1940). Inspired by Morris and Fabianism he designed new prototypes for working class housing. The design of twentieth century housing, new suburbs and new towns perhaps owes more to Unwin, and to his great works in New Earswick, Letchworth and Hampstead Garden Suburb than to any other individual."--BOOK JACKET.
