The culture of Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France was a unique place for those interested in art, design and architecture. It was formed around three distinct personalities with individual pathways, but that history has inextricably linked: Eileen Gray, Thomas Rebutato and Le Corbusier. In 1924, the Irish furniture designer Eileen Gray, at the beginning of her architectural practice and her lover Jean Badovici purchased a plot of land and built a holiday home called "E-1027." Le Corbusier, a friend of Badovici's, visited and painted a series of murals on its walls between 1937-39. Whether he painted these murals out of admiration for her work or jealousy of her accomplishment, Gray hated what he did. Still, Le Corbusier became intricately tied with the future of the house. Failing to purchase it himself, he eventually bought a piece of property just east of E-1027 next to a restaurant/bar called "L'Etoile de Mer" which was owned by Thomas Rebutato. Very quickly, the famous architect became a regular at the restaurant and even painted a mural on one of the facades. In 1952, he attached a small wooden cabin known as "Le Cabanon" to the restaurant that served as his holiday residence until his death.
