This special issue on architect and urban designer Arata Isozaki has four unique features that are usually absent in conventional overviews of his work. Firstly, only projects by Isozaki from the 1970s are included; secondly, it features working drawings rather than design drawings; thirdly, just four works were selected for inclusion; and finally, particular emphasis was made in the interview with the architect to elicit his own remarks on topics pertaining to the 1970s, theory and practice, and what was experimental about specific buildings. The chosen works are the Oita Medical Hall Extension, Kitakyushu Central Library, West Japan General Exhibition Centre, and Kaijima House.

Résumé:
This special issue empowers and encourages the reader to choose paths, as if walking through the city, an intellectual dérive. Rather than presenting a book of pictures, its strategy provides a basic, research-driven bibliography to assist the further exploration of ideas. Opening with an introduction by Darko Radovic, it goes on to closely examine the multifaceted Tokyo metropolis from an array of perspectives and themes. These include shared housing, public bathhouses, pseudo-public space, urban spectacle, infills and alleyways, graffiti and street art, stacking historical times, hidden poverty, and more. Radovic, Kengo Kuma, and Hidenobu Jinnai discuss the city’s urban DNA.

Résumé:
This issue offers an inside look at the architecture, landscape, and cities of Colombia, a land of fabulous natural beauty that has used architecture as a key agent in rebuilding its cities and civil society following decades of strife. A photo essay by Camilo Echavarría shows how travels through the tropical region reveal a homogenous, abstract passage of time, where architecture is conditioned by various landscapes and geographic diversity. Medellín-based architect and guest editor Camilo Restrepo Ochoa leads this journey through Colombia, showing works by fourteen practices across three generations, and neighbourhoods that are reinvigorated through mobility and urban space.

Résumé:
The work of Swedish architect Bernt Nyberg is featured in this monographic issue, which focuses especially on his formative projects from the 1960s and ’70s. A huge endeavour in the making, the research, documentation, and production of materials for this publication have lasted four years. Given the relatively unknown nature of Nyberg’s work, the narratives herein are derived from direct sources, either through archival research or interviews with the architect’s surviving collaborators. Matthew Hall headed the investigation into Nyberg’s currently endangered body of work in Sweden, which ranges from homes and row houses to administrative, care, and maintenance facilities.
