Résumé:
And Now the Ensemble!!! is intended as a challenge to architects, their clients, and commissioning authorities to understand and create urban development as a dynamic and collective work of art and to make dialogue central to design. Design, atmosphere, and usage can make every new building relate to its local surroundings. As a design process, this contextual expansion does not simply imitate the urban pattern, but also interprets what is already there, to some extent modernizes it, makes the familiar alien by employing unusual atmospheric imagery, and ultimately transforms the accumulated chaos of soloists into an orchestrated whole.

Presented by ETH Studio Jan De Vylder, Carrousel Confessions Confusion is a series revealing both the authors’ personal interests and the studio’s own pursuits in the form of confessions. This instalment invites Adam Caruso, who established Caruso St John Architects with Peter St John in 1990. Since then, the practice has built throughout Europe, with projects ranging in scale from major urban developments and cultural venues to interventions in complex historic settings. Caruso reflects on his experiences growing up in Montreal and visiting Mount Royal every week with his family, the mountain located directly west of downtown and one of the city’s largest greenspaces.

Résumé:
This volume addresses the widespread tendency to discard broken items rather than to refurbish them. Despite the negative ecological effects of overconsumption, overproduction and waste, the habit of replacing rather than repairing goods has persisted and even worsened over recent decades. To counteract this trend, students at the University of Applied Sciences in Munich and ETH Zurich have been developing imaginative concepts for repairing a wide variety of objects, applying them both manually and by using digital techniques such as 3D printing. Beyond restoration, many projects develop and improve the repaired objects constructively, materially, or even in terms of design, lending them new value. This publication presents a variety of approaches and projects, plus essays by notable personalities from the fields of architecture, preservation, materials science, design, manufacturing and craft.

Résumé:
At the start of the 1980s, Michael Hopkins and Partners was a successful architecture firm in London, with a solid track record of design and building. By the end of the 1990s, they were far more impressive having established themselves as innovators at the highest level. That work is most evident in five urban buildings in England that they built in that period; those buildings are the focus of ''Hopkins in the city." In addition to close examinations of those buildings, including survey drawings and new photographs, the book offers building studies from five contemporary European architects and Michael Hopkins’s own perspective as presented in his lecture ''Technology Comes to Town.'' Essays by Adam Caruso and Helen Thomas, meanwhile, frame the British scene and revisit the fundamental issues of technology, style, and context that run through discussions of twentieth-century architecture.
