Rotterdams West 8 is not only one of the largest, but also one of the best-known and most active design firms working in Europe today in the field of "urban design and landscape architecture." The phrase suggests the firms strongly interdisciplinary orientation between landscape architecture and town planning. Its projects are provocative, avant-garde in the typically Dutch manner, and not afraid of contact with popular culture. They were created in close collaboration with such architects as Richard Rogers, Steven Holl, Dominique Perrault, Rem Koolhaas, Renzo Piano, and many others. The founder and director of the firm and its most highly visible figure is Adriaan Geuze, who is the author of this book.

In a period of over thirty years, Arne van Herk and Sabien de Kleijn have achieved a varied and unconventional body of work. It consists of architecture, urban design, interior design, furniture, household objects, films and experiments in form and material. This book notes the ingenious skylights in their houseboat as well as the houses on Borneokade Amsterdam. It gives due attention to the foam-rubber objects, the fifty-centimetre high platform shoes, the Woutertje Pieterse School in Leiden and the accommodation building for the Dutch Royal Navy in Den Helder. The architects' working method and their projects are explored in an essay by Hans Ibelings. Adriaan Geuze and Cilia Erens present individual outlooks on the work of Van Herk & De Kleijn. In 1996 Mateja Vehovar and Stefan Jauslin formed their own architectural office in Zurich after studying at Columbia University in New York and the ETH in Zurich respectively. Clearly marked by an interdisciplinary approach, their work revolves around landscape architecture, exhibition design, room installations, as well as architectural projects. In their work, space is used as a medium to bring about specific experiences and feelings in its users. In 1999, Vehovar & Jauslin were awarded the Swiss Federal Prize for art and this publication documents 16 selected works, situating them in the context of experimental design.
