Résumé:
This book, a documentary history, records a cognitive history of the emergence of modern architecture. Cutting across disciplinarian and institutional divisions, as we know them today, it reconstructs developments within the framework of a cognitive history of the past. Modern is here taken to mean the radical re-thinking of architecture from the end of the tenth century in Europe to the end of the eighteenth century. Among the key debates that mark the period are those that oppose tradition to innovation, canon to discovery, geometrical formality to natural picturesqueness, the functional to the hedonistic.

Three thousand years ago the Greeks built monuments that have come to epitomize Western culture, such as the Parthenon and the Temple of Athena. In this book, a renowned architectural historian re-examines buildings and sites of Greek classical antiquity, not as expressions of pedantic, archaic rules, but as truly innovative paradigms - and shows how they gave rise to modern architecture. Classical Greek Architecture features fascinating archival photographs, site maps, and architectural plans. It discusses not only the technology but also the myths, rituals, social structures, and political conflicts that left their mark in the ultimate design of a given building. With chapters covering a range of topics from the status of Greek architecture today and the uses of the various types of buildings to the influences of African and Asian cultures on the Greeks, this is a thorough, scholarly, yet accessible work of reference.

Résumé:
Renowned for being a universal designer, Santiago Calatrava has been a singular force in reviving an excitement for construction technology and infrastructure projects. Over the last two decades, Calatrava revolutionized the idea of bridges from utilitarian, mechanical instruments into elegant objects that enhance the sense of place and community of their settings. More than thirty celebrated bridges are featured here in drawings and full-color photography, including never-before-published projects such as the Woodall Rodgers Bridge in Dallas, the Sundial Bridge in Redding, California, as well as bridges in Barcelona, Bilbao, Buenos Aires, Jerusalem, Manchester, the Netherlands, Orléans, Paris, Seville, and Valencia.

Résumé:
Influenced by the critic Rayner Banham, by the work of French architect/engineer Jean Prouvé, and by his early experience of working with Norman Foster, Jacques Ferrier has developed a highly individual approach to architecture that seeks to harness technology in order to create buildings and urban environments that fully engage with the practical and emotional needs of people. Central to Ferrier’s philosophy is the idea of the “Sensual City,” which aims to create buildings and cities that engage with the five senses?sound, smell, sight, touch, and taste that compose human experience. The Architecture of Jacques Ferrier is a review of this master architect’s work to date in Europe and Asia: from the French pavilion designed for the Shanghai World Expo 2010 and the Tabarly Sailing Museum in Brittany; to showcase headquarters for Hachette Livres and Piper-Heidsieck Champagne and the next-generation skyscraper, Hypergreen.

Résumé:
"Times of Creative Destruction" is about the years that followed the end of WWII, one of the most seminal and dramatic epochs in human history, during which extraordinary star-buildings were born, cities exploded, and an unprecedented world of a ‘Third Ecology’ emerged. Never before was there such a flurry of daring mega-constructions, such daring spatial acrobatics, ‘star’ buildings by star architects attained by star developers, mega-constructions, technological feats, and flourishing spatial acrobatics. But, for all its exhilarating creativity, this was also an era of unanticipated, intractable, irreversible destruction reducing the uniqueness and diversity of cultural, social and ecological peaks and valleys of our world, to a ‘desert flatland’, environmental inequality and unhappiness. This book critically discusses and revaluates these contradictory events, bringing together and commenting on a selection of shorter key texts by Tzonis and Lefaivre, the product of a rare research and writing partnership.
