Based around an out-of-print anthology devoted to prehistoric collections unearthed by archaeological expeditions in Algeria, French artist Camille Henrot's latest project treats this ethnographic material as motifs of a contemporary grotesque. The scientific document photographs, diagrams, and captions becomes part of a layered array incorporating traces of our present age: humans, animals, plants, minerals, and other objects. Freely mixing the pre- and post-historic, archaic and actual, Henrot constructs an exploration of human bodies, information media, and meaning using dated pornography, technological refuse, tools and instruments, signs, and more.

A collection of short essays by artist Camille Henrot (born 1978), ''Milkyways'' explores the ambivalence of motherhood and the process of creation in both art-making and life. Each chapter explores a cosmos of references in literature, comics, art history, psychoanalysis and more—from ancient maternity myths to modern maternity wards; from Marcel Proust to Maggie Nelson to Hélène Cixous. Accompanied by illustrations of the artist’s work in painting, drawing and sculpture, Henrot’s essays oscillate freely between the personal and the societal, the candid and the complex, the visceral and the mundane. ''Milkyways'' was originally conceived for Republik magazine at the invitation of author Antje Stahl, and was written with Jacob Bromberg, Antje Stahl and Léa Trudel.

In this beautifully designed and sensuously illustrated hybrid artist book / exhibition document, New York based French artist Camille Henrot reconsiders source material and ideas from her Artist Research Fellowship at the Smithsonian, her 2013 video Grosse Fatigue and her installation The Pale Fox (2014 15), which was shown at several museums throughout Europe. The accompanying text by Henrot, in collaboration with Clara Meister and Michael Connor, forms the core of the book, and is in keeping with Henrot s characteristic approach to knowledge production and organization. An interview between the artist and social anthropologist Monique Jeudy-Ballini offers further insight into Henrot s mode of thinking and her fascination with anthropology. A natural continuation of her artistic practice, Elephant Child combines Henrot s research materials, photographic fragments, preparatory notes and sketches alongside color photographs of the artist s sculptures, video stills and installation images.
