Olafur Eliasson, one of today's most acclaimed contemporary artists, and David Adjaye, a rising architecture star, have engaged in a unique collaboration. Eliasson's light installation "Your Black Horizon," which debuted at the 2005 Venice Biennale, was conceived from the start as a hybridization of both of their practices. The piece consists of a light, representing a horizon line that emanates through a narrow gap in an architectural structure. This is the only light source, and it runs around the entire dark gallery space, without any visual obstruction. The optical illusion that is achieved is that of a reversed horizon line. This publication is presented in conjunction with the installation of this project in Croatia. Critic and curator Daniel Birnbaum, writer Eva Ebersberger and curator Daniela Zyman contribute in-depth essays, which are accompanied by large-scale spreads of the project.

Private space is experienced as the extension of the self; in its simplest sense, it means that the space is mine. It is not neutral and not shared with others. Is one lives in a situation in which the need for private space is not respected, one can suffer denial of the self, a suffocation of the personal. There is a relationship between the sense of self and actual physical privacy, and there is a relationship between the self and what is mine. And yet the autonomy of the self rests on the paradox that autonomy must be provided by the other.

The ocean is rising and with it sea level, water temperature, acidity, algal blooms, and storm surges. Also on the rise are the metrics of accelerated human activity. How are we to fathom the political, aesthetic, and epistemological rise of the oceans from centuries-long invisibilization and forgetting? What ideas and memories do the oceans hold in their depth and reanimate, when the earth's ecosystems suffer? Asking different questions and using multiple registers of sensing expand the possibilities to engage with the oceanic at this precarious moment and rethink its relations to the terrestrial. This volume is a companion reader to "Territorial Agency: Oceans in Transformation", an independent oceanic research initiative commissioned by TBA21–Academy and operating out of Ocean Space in Venice. It offers forty-one thoughtful contributions by artists, scholars, scientists, and ocean activists in response to the rapidly changing oceans. Writing from places of conflict and concern, the contributions reveal the magnitude and urgency of ecological devastation, but more important, they provide alternative narratives that strengthen our knowledge communities and contribute to worldmaking practices from an oceanic perspective.
