This new volume, designed in collaboration with American artist Adam Pendleton (born 1984) and Ghanaian British artist and architect David Adjaye (born 1966), explores the blurred boundary between art and architecture. Featuring new silkscreen canvases by Pendleton and marble sculptures by Adjaye, this publication brings the artists and their works into conversation. The two collaborators discuss their respective practices and their process of working together on the creation of the exhibition at Pace, as well as notions of history, language, abstraction and space- whether architectonic or on canvas- and how these themes involve and reveal themselves in their work. Images of finished artworks are interspersed with photographs of their production, giving a behind-the-scenes look at process, from the quarrying, cutting and polishing of marble for Adjaye’s works to the meeting of ink and canvas in Pendleton’s studio.

This book challenges traditional assumptions about the relationship between art and architecture. From 2008 through 2010, David Adjaye, along with Marc McQuade, taught three studios at the Princeton School of Architecture. Each studio focused on a collaboration with three distinguished artists Matthew Ritchie, Teresita Fernandez, and Jorge Pardo on interventions in three vastly different sites: the state of New Jersey, the Gowanus Canal in Brooklyn, and the city of Merida in Mexicos Yucatan Peninsula. Through an exploratory process of questioning, developing, and testing, each architect and artist reexamines the expectations traditionally associated with the conventions of architectural design and representation.

"Constructed narratives" brings together essays and several recently completed buildings by David Adjaye, in the United States and elsewhere. In the essays, Adjaye shows how his approach to the design of temporary pavilions and furniture, private houses, and installations at the 2015 Venice Biennale feeds into his designs for public buildings. Daniela Keiser ranks among the most renowned contemporary artists in Switzerland. In 2017 she was awarded the Swiss national art prize Prix Meret Oppenheim as well as a studio grant from Landis & Gyr Stiftung that enabled her to embark on an extended stay in London’s East End. There she discovered the Idea Store, the public library on Whitechapel Road built by British architect David Adjaye. Upon its opening to the public, this institution quickly became a meeting place for a broad spectrum of society, including socially disadvantaged people. The goal of the Idea Stores—eight of them have been opened in various London boroughs since 2005— is to enhance formerly neglected neighborhoods and offer a low-threshold source of education and information. From that initial Idea Store on Whitechapel Road, Daniela Keiser began to take pictures of the goings-on in the street outside. Her "Library—Idea Store, 321 Whitechapel Rd, Shadwell, London E1 1BU series" reveals a calm, repetitive, but insistent image of the city and offers insight into the small everyday variations of the surrounding world. This book pairs her photographic reflections with a conversation between David Adjaye and art and architecture historian Philip Ursprung. They talk about Keiser’s perception of the site and—without actually showing the building—the impact of urban design and the architect’s intentions.

Over a decade, he tirelessly documented these dynamic, colorful cities, photographing thousands of buildings, sites, and public spaces, and letting each building speak for itself.
