Résumé:
London has always been known for its iconic buildings, but the city has recently witnessed an explosion of new architecture from the world’s most acclaimed architects. This breathtaking volume offers a fascinating look at the city’s rapidly changing skyline and celebrates the enormous array of styles, materials, and cutting-edge technology that have been employed by today’s leading architects. The projects profiled here—brought to life by photographer Richard Schulman—range from dance and aquatic centers to world-class museums and global office headquarters. The book includes Rafael Viñoly’s “Walkie-Talkie” and “The Gherkin” by Foster + Partners, as well as Renzo Piano’s mixed-use skyscraper, “The Shard,” across the Thames. Tucked into a medieval alley, OMA’s New Court Rothschild Bank nimbly juxtaposes contemporary features with more traditional ones. Meanwhile, alongside St. Paul’s Cathedral, Jean Nouvel’s One New Change cleverly plays off its storied environs with an ingeniously constructed glass block that allows for multiple views of the iconic church. From the Tate Modern extension to the Emirates Airline tram, and from the Peckham Library to the US Embassy building, no new stone is left unturned or unremarked upon. This book demonstrates how one of the world’s oldest cities manages to feel eternally new and exciting.

Résumé:
In this book, Edwin Heathcote looks at the cultural impact of street furniture using photography as a measure of how these things have become indispensable components of the cityscape. Based mainly in and on London – but including New York, Paris and Budapest – Heathcote uses history, personal reflection and the lenses of photographers to examine the status of these urban artefacts in both the contemporary imagination and the city streets themselves. It looks at the changing landscape of the cityscape and the way in which street furniture has been adapted to address new technologies, the culture of surveillance and shifts in taste, orthodoxy and material culture. On the Street looks at the language of street furniture reflected through the gaze of photography and contemporary culture. It is a book about the elements of the streetscape which can exert an increasing impact on our interaction with the cities we inhabit.

Résumé:
Structures built in response to war and death pose unique architectural challenges-challenges that transcend the physical to encompass symbolism, beliefs, and culture. "Monument Builders" highlights this rarely discussed yet fascinating building type, exploring the links between different perceptions of death and their expression in architecture over the course of the twentieth century. Sensitive but never somber, it features the work of an impressive international roster of architects as it moves from neo-classisist and modernist treatments of death to war and holocaust memorials.

Résumé:
Fragments of Wilderness City reviews the work of renowned architect Brian Avery. This publication presents perspectives from academics and architecture historians, exploring projects in India and the Middle East; major cultural commissions such as the National Film Theatre, the Museum of the Moving Image, London Transport Museum, and the Royal Academy of the Dramatic Arts' headquarters in Bloomsbury, London; masterplanning work for Oxford Street in London, The Horniman Museum, and the Avenue of the Emirates in Abu Dhabi. Alongside profiles of their innovative work in product design and within the workplace is an essay by director Bryan Avery, providing insights into his notion of the sustainable 'wilderness city'. This manifesto sets out a vision of an accountable architectural and planning approach to the contemporary city, situated in a natural landscape and taking on board references to both the walled cities of the medieval period and the self-contained urban environments of the twentieth century 'new towns'.
