The new alpine 'hut' on Monte Rosa, at an altitude of 2883 meters (9458 feet) near Zermatt was opened in September 2009. This innovative building emerged from a collaborative effort between the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, the Swiss Alpine Club (SAC), and many experts and specialist manufacturers. It is also the result of pioneering technologies in design, calculation and building construction. In the form of discussions, essays on special topics, photographs and plans, this volume documents the building's genesis and planning and the construction of what is a milestone in high alpine architecture.

"Future Cities Laboratory" reports on the same named research program and its mission to shape sustainable future cities through science, by design, in place. It offers a global perspective on cities from the vantage point of the world's most populous and rapidly urbanizing continent: Asia, which also acts as the base of the laboratory. This volume illustrates the richness and diversity of research at the Future Cities Laboratory (FCL). The book, which is the first in a planned series, describes new processes and types of data that are being used both to understand and improve cities. New approaches pioneered by FCL and its partners offer an important method to bridge the gap between knowledge production and action, with the aim of ensuring the sustainability of future cities. To reach this goal, FCL works closely with stakeholders in government, industry and society. Part of the Architectural Papers series, The Middle East explores the architecture of a nearly paradoxical region. Both the cradle of culture, where much remains of thousands of years of human society, the Middle East is also an area of great flux in contemporary history. This volume explores this dichotomy in three sections. The first, “Beyond the View,” investigates notions of the Middle Eastern architecture through a comparative study of different parts of the Arab world. “Case Studies” focuses on three exceptionally different cities—Beirut, Amman, and Doha—through an investigation of recent and future building projects. The final chapter, “Limits” looks at the architectural practices of countries that constitute the geographic, cultural, and political limits of the region: Israel, Turkey, and Iran.
