This catalogue accompanies an exhibition of the work of Christopher Williams at the Contemporary Art Gallery, Vancouver. For this project Christopher Williams drew from three disparate sources: the development of colour photography for commercial applications in the United States, the European reception of Pop Art - specifically in relation to Marcel Broodthaer’s first solo exhibition at Galerie Saint-Laurent, Brussels in 1964, and the work of Raoul Hausmann, made during his stay in Ibiza, Spain between 1933 and 1936.

Résumé:
Spanning 1989 to 2009, this anthology collects the influential writings of American artist, musician and critic John Miller (born 1954), which have been lauded by Bruce Hainley in Artforum as “a pungent intervention into the ideologies of beauty, representation and looking.” Ranging from reviews and cultural essays to theory and artist's statements, Miller's writings distinguish themselves from other styles of art criticism insofar as they relate to his larger artistic concerns with the social context of the art object and its sociopolitical ramifications as a commodity (as the title of this volume implies); they are also deeply informed by Miller's vast knowledge of art history and popular culture. More recently, Miller has entered into close dialogue with Dan Graham, Bob Nickas and Nicolas Guagnini. Many of the essays collected here - such as his contributions to the German magazine Texte zur Kunst - appear in English for the first time.

Résumé:
A ‘complex’ can be an architectural configuration, a psychological syndrome or a political apparatus. In this book, John Miller approaches Educational Complex through corresponding lines of enquiry, considering the representation of Kelley’s schools (and his childhood home) as architectural models; popular fantasies associated with false memory syndrome; and the liberal democratic premises underpinning education. During his lifetime, Mike Kelley worked with a wide range of media, exploring themes as varied as grassroots politics, religious systems and social class. Miller shows that in Educational Complex, Kelley expands this political and aesthetic focus to test the ideological horizon of art as an institution.
