Résumé:
This fifth volume in Lars Müller’s Architect’s Studio series is dedicated to the Nairobi-based architects Cave_bureau. This acclaimed collective of architects and researchers-- the first Kenyan firm to appear at the Venice Architecture Biennale, in 2021-- explores the synergy between architecture, urbanism and nature, and curates performative events of resistance within caves along the Great Rift Valley in East Africa. The cave, as physical space and as metaphor, is seen by the collective as a provocation to test the limits of contemporary architecture. Here, Cave_bureau’s Stella Mutegi and Kabage Karanja describe eight of their projects. Photographs are accompanied by essays posing questions about the future of architecture in the age of the Anthropocene, the effects of colonial extraction and erasure on African architecture, as well as the specificity of each continent and each geographic space.

Résumé:
Founded by Eyal Weizman at Goldsmiths College in London in 2010, the research agency Forensic Architecture has investigated dozens of incidents of state violence—military intervention, environmental destruction, border violence and police murder. Working at the intersection of architecture, law, journalism, human rights and ecology, Forensic Architecture researches conflicts and crimes around the world, using architectural tools and methods to conduct spatial and architectural analyses of particular incidents. They do not design new buildings, but like other architects, they examine and model spaces, with the aim of shedding light on events. This catalog focuses on the witnesses at the core of Forensic Architecture’s work. Featuring texts by Weizman, Christina Varvia and a roundtable discussion between members of the current team, this richly illustrated book opens a window into Forensic Architecture’s working methods and projects.

Résumé:
Arab Contemporary is the second chapter in the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art’s Architecture, Culture and Identity series, following 2012’s New Nordic, which explores architecture in specific regions. Arab Contemporary attempts to distinguish particular features of architecture that are shared by Arab countries from the Arab Peninsula through Lebanon to Morocco. While these areas are primarily connected via a common language, they further share major elements of visual culture, such as the use of calligraphy in architecture. Ranging over varied architectural works as well as visual arts, this volume showcases architecture by Ateliers Jean Nouvel, X-Architects, Henning Larsen Architects and many others, alongside artwork by Egyptian visual artist Mounir Fatmi, the Saudi artist Ahmed Mater, art historian and graphic artist Bahia Shehab and the Tuareg author Ibrahim al-Koni.

Résumé:
Already known as one of Mexico’s greatest architects, Tatiana Bilbao (born 1972) has created some of the country’s most striking buildings. Her first project was a collaboration with artist Gabriel Orozco on his beach house near Puerto Escondido, and she quickly developed a collaborative approach, working with artists such as Ai Weiwei on projects in China and Spain, or with the Culiacán Botanical Garden (designed by engineer and gardener Carlos Murillo) to install art works and service buildings. Bilbao’s buildings always take social conditions into account, as demonstrated in projects such as her design for a pilgrimage route. Featuring these projects and more, this overview provides insights into the Mexican cultural, artistic and building traditions that Bilbao incorporates into her projects. The volume addresses the question of the use of collage in architecture and embeds Bilbao’s work in a contemporary as well as a historical context.
