Beautifully produced to include a selection of family photographs from the artist's childhood and ancestry alongside generous documentation of her recent concurrent one-person exhibitions in Krefeld, Germany and Nuremberg, this volume sheds new light on one of the most influential American artists of her generation. Taking as her starting point an eighteenth-century American silk embroidery entitled "First, Second and Last Scene of Mortality," which depicts a white woman working at a table while a white child and a black servant rest on one side of her and a closed black coffin sits on the other side, Smith here develops several narrative threads that revolve around the theme of the unmarried woman. With excursions into Christian iconography and the history of the American postcolonial era, she speaks also to the archetype of the inspired female creator or artist.

Again and again, Levine's works pose questions of aura, authoriality and, perhaps most importantly, value. Pairs and Posses is the first monograph to focus exclusively on the sculptural duos and trios that the artist has been making since 1992. Here, objects found on eBay and in junk or antique shops might be cast in black glass, crystal or bronze. The transposition of these objects into worthier material automatically renders kitsch objects works of "high" art. Where Levine's early work debunked modernism's aura of irrefutability, the pieces in Pairs and Posses perform an opposite inversion of cultural worth.

The artist (born in 1961 in Madrid, resident in Chicago) has been creating multiform works that deal with social and political borderline situations for over a decade. His work demonstrates how certain powers and systems, whether natural or created by human beings, affect the world we live in. This is a comprehensive documentation of the exhibition The Krefeld suite: installations in the two Mies Villas in Krefeld. Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle , multimedia artist and Mies van der Rohe specialist, has created a cinematographic installation especially for the Krefeld Mies Villa, where he shows the relationship between their architecture and the “architecture” of icebergs. The installations are built around the theme of time in the dynamic relationship between prehistoric, historic and contemporary time.
