Daido Moriyama (born 1938) first attracted international attention in the 1970s, with his gritty, black-and-white photographs of Shinjuku, a bustling area of Tokyo. Published for a spring 2012 exhibition at Reflex Art Gallery, Amsterdam, and with more than 230 large-scale images, Journey for Something offers an exciting overview of Moriyama’s new work, as well as his classic images and some never-before-seen photographs that have been carefully selected by the artist for this volume. Many of Moriyama’s photographs are shot with a light, hand-held camera, at times through a window or from across the street, often as if he were a tourist himself. A wide assortment of playful and almost surrealist images, Journey for Something follows Moriyama from Tokyo to Osaka, from shimmering rows of nightclubs to shoes dangling from a telephone wire and a man running naked through the streets.

Vera Mercer joined the artistic avant-garde in Paris of the early 1960s; she did portraits of Daniel Spoerri, Marcel Duchamp, Niki de Saint Phalle, and many other artists. The catalog combines these portraits with her early records of the Paris market halls, and, above all, her recent exuberant still lifes. She creates a magnificently baroque ambiance, meticulously arranging meat, fish, poultry, and vegetables in soft candlelight and classic composing.

The American photographer Vera Mercer’s oeuvre defies easy summary. She started taking pictures in Paris in the 1960s, making portraits of her then husband Daniel Spoerri and other members of the Fluxus group and Nouveaux Réalistes. In the 1970s, she took a long creative hiatus: after moving to Omaha, Nebraska, she poured all her energy into starting a number of restaurants and developing an entire downtown neighborhood. But then, in the early years of the new millennium, she returned to photography, capturing breathtaking neo-baroque still lifes featuring flowers, fruits, freshly killed game, antique glasses, and illuminating candles in large formats. Mercer’s fourth monograph presents her most recent opulent still lifes in colour, as well as a novelty in her oeuvre: restrained black-and-white flower pictures and portraits realized as small-format platinum prints.
