Michael Wolf is best known for his large-size architectural shots from Hong Kong and Chicago. Actually the series “Architecture of Density” and “The Transplant City” are part of a constantly growing oeuvre which deals with the conditions of the modern urban life under the title “Life in Cities”. With his recently published book “Tokyo Compression”, which shows depressing impressions from the subway system in Tokyo, the photographer raises the question: In how far may, should or must photographers deal with the public today? Michael Wolf takes up this topic in his work “Street View”, which has been started at the same time as “Tokyo Compression”, and reinterprets the genre of the street photography in a highly unconventional way by using the almost inexhaustible picture pool of the Google Tool as basic material for his own images. With the camera in front of the screen he gets “his” images out of the automatically generated, authorless Google screens. Extreme details and geographical fade-ins of the software, which usually should serve the orientation, induce photographs which have an irritating as well as alarming effect like the underground portraits from Tokyo.

Sitting, people do already for a long time. Therefore chairs have been manufactured ever since. In Hong Kong many of them end up on the street. Plastic chairs, wicker chairs, armchairs, stools, bar stools, office chairs. Old and new, whole, broken, rebuilt and repaired. Together with alienated crates, cartons, wooden blocks and foam pillows they form curious roadside seating ensembles for the short relaxation or a little chat in between. 'Seating Arrangements' is the third of a total of 9 volumes in which Michael Wolf celebrates the diverse aspects of street life in Hong Kong and the improvisational skills of the urban residents.

Chicago, like many urban centers throughout the world, has recently undergone a surge in new construction, grafting a new layer of architectural experimentation onto those of past eras. In early 2007, the Museum of Contemporary Photography, with the support of U.S. Equities Realty, invited Michael Wolf as an artist-in-residence to document this phenomenon. Bringing his unique perspective on changing urban environments to a city renowned for its architectural legacy, Wolf chose to photograph the central downtown area, focusing specifically on issues of voyeurism and the contemporary urban landscape in flux.

Michael Wolf achieved fame when he won the 2005 World Press Photo with his China, Factory of the World project, and the 2010 World Press Photo with Tokyo Compression. The present book offers his personal take on the French capital. Singling out typical architectural features of the Parisian landscape he renders the seemingly banal immortal. Roofs, chimneys, and lights provide the pictures with rhythm, with their colors, shapes, and above all their volumes. Wolf invites the reader to enter his highly distinctive visual world and let his gaze follow the snaking lines of walls and gutters, dwelling on unexpected details lovingly picked out. The photographer's underlying desire is to encourage us to consider the environmental and architectural context that provides a framework for all these rigorously rectangular features. This dreamlike journey into a Paris viewed from the rooftops is underlined in the second part of the book. The shadows of trees decorate the façades of various buildings, creating a visual poetry and prompting an intimate dialogue where, in the absence of all human presence, nature and architecture blend into one another.

Perched atop drainpipes, set in glass jars, peeking out from vents and air-conditioning units, or dangling from wires, the flora of Hong Kongs urban landscape is as ubiquitous as it is hardy, yet almost goes unnoticed against the overwhelming backdrop of apartment high-rises, neon lights and cracked walls. Photographed by Michael Wolf, the forlorn cultivars and opportunistic vegetation of the city whether carefully tended, forgotten or simply growing wild appear as a metaphor of natures struggles amidst the concrete jungle.
