A window is a mediating device between our body and the environment: by simply opening or closing it, we can regulate air, light, and sight. Both climatic and cultural conditions, alongside technological developments, shape the architecture of windows. Due to its mountains, climate, and geographical position at the heart of Europe, Switzerland has generated a wide variety of window forms. Presented here is a collection of windows gathered from field research, with full-page hand drawings portraying each window as part of a complex network of elements. Short texts offer insight into the historical, technological, and socioeconomic conditions of each spatial configuration.

Atelier Bow-Wow allows a crucial inside look at a range of more than 40 recent projects, including residential buildings, public facilities and installations created specifically for exhibitions, with page after page of detailed sectional perspective drawings. These elaborate diagrams are based on section details drafted in the final design phase of each project, whereby the studio seeks the best representation of design characteristics, investigating various parameters by shifting perspectives and drawing in different ways. Latent spatiality and geometric form become readily apparent to the observer, while the graphic anatomy of lines and data informatively depicts each architectural work.

Modernisation in the 20th century has deeply transformed Japanese society, bringing economic wealth and social well-being, but also increasing divisions and specialisation in society. This transformation has been increasingly questioned in recent years, and finds expression in architectural projects. The catalogue for the Japanese Pavilion at the Venice Architecture Biennale, curated by Momoyo Kaijima, one of the founders of Atelier Bow-Wow, this volume examines the role of architectural drawings in this reappraisal, as they form the basis on which a common approach in the design of individualised yet shared environments in today’s globalised society can be formulated. It proposes architectural ethnography as a methodology of social engagement.
