Résumé:
This volume announces the onset of a new era in architecture. It represents a redefinition of the architectural possibilities that were first opened up by Neil Spiller in his cyberspace titles of the late 90s. By looking beyond the present perception of buildings as static architectural objects, Spiller and his contributors concentrate on the potential of buildings to employ dextrous, cutting-edge technologies to create architecture that is reflexive. That is architecture which is highly responsive and intelligent, able to translate and connect to its contextual and environmental surroundings at a new level, while also operating in three or more spaces simultaneously. It is effectively an architecture that is wholly visionary rather than being grounded by the limitations of the present.

Résumé:
There is a newfound interest in architectural education. This AD is a survey of some of the best contemporary architecture student work in the world. The most forward-looking architecture schools worldwide are reinventing pedagogy in the hope of developing radical syllabi that are a rich mix of the virtual and the actual. Design education is changing and adapting to compensate for the new material changes to the discipline, and is being used to disentangle old, outmoded spatial practices and replace them with new paradigms of space and representation. This issue showcases the students and teachers who are pushing the envelope of architecture in extraordinary ways, offering their insights into its future materiality and spatial dexterity. It premieres a new young generation of architects who are likely to become names in the architectural profession and possibly important teachers themselves. Their work has been selected by their own influential teachers of architecture who describe the studio methodologies – and reasons for them – that prompted the work.

Résumé:
California has historically provided a fertile breeding ground for radical modes of architectural thinking, practice and building, which from the 1920s onwards was sparked by the presence of eminent émigré architects. It was also central to the birth of ‘cool’ mid-century Modernism – all in parallel with the intense concentration of design and experimentation in the film, aerospace and tech industries. This AD issue explores the influential formal tropes generated in the nexus between Los Angeles and the Bay Area, as well as the thriving theoretical preoccupations that have brought California's architects global attention. Between Hollywood and the Silicon Valley, this unique context has nurtured and become the platform for those who not only build buildings around the world, but have also founded and directed schools and educated emergent generations of architects.

Résumé:
The design of imaginary, conceptual, or radical buildings is as old as the practice of architecture itself. For centuries, architects such as Piranesi, Ledoux, and Sant'Elia have drawn on their creative abilities to produce breathtaking works of imagination. Since World War II, technology has caught up with our imagination: there are few buildings that can be envisioned but not built. For the past six decades, architects have created an astonishing range of constructs and urban utopias that have influenced generations of practitioners. Architects such as Libeskind, Koolhaas, Eisenman, Hadid, and many others, whose works were once considered too experimental or controversial to construct, are creating cultural icons the world over. This definitive history of experimental architecture since 1945 provides a thematic overview of the most important and far-reaching work produced in the last sixty years; a survey of contemporary experimental practices, shown through case studies; and an illustrated glossary of ideas, movements, people, and terms. 450+ illustrations, 250 in color.

Résumé:
This book stands in opposition to the popular notion that the best architecture is built on compromise. Rather, Neil Spiller argues, the most original and brave products of the architectural mind are often to be found in those projects which, for whatever reason, never came to fruition. "Lost Architectures" presents an array of such projects from the last decades of the twentieth century, consituting the unrealised dreams of some of the most inspirational architects working in the period. Most of the projects featured here have seldom, if ever, been published before, and some represent the last hand-drawn work of their creators before the age of the computer finally came into full force. Whilst they do not follow any specific style, these projects embody a spirit defined by Spiller as New Romanticism - a spirit which combines elements of aesthetic decadence and a certain camp mannerism with a love of angularity and mechanised ritual. Some of the architects in question are still in practice, with a great deal of high-profile built work behind them; others have never been recognised as they perhaps should have been. In both cases, this book is an invaluable resource of information and inspiration for students of architecture, as well as for theorists, historians and lay readers. It provides essential exposure for a range of work of great vitality which might otherwise risk being lost in the course of time.
