Using over 100 carefully selected buildings the roots, traditions and conditions from which Austrian architecture has developed are made accessible. A concise overview of building activities in the 20th century is conveyed, using over 900 documents, largely unpublished photographs and sketches, drawings and models. A particularly important feature of this chronological survey lies in highlighting Austria's contribution to contemporary architecture.

The town of Schlins in Vorarlberg has long been a Mecca for all those with an interest in clay construction. On the steep southern slope, the clay builder Martin Rauch worked together with Zurich architect Roger Boltshauser to erect his new artist’s residence. From its foundation all the way to its fl at roof, it is made entirely of excavated soil from the site on which it is built: the floors and arched ceilings, the plasterwork on ceiling and walls, the washstands, tiles, and stairs – all are made from the single material clay in its various forms. The house is a show house as well as the document of a unique collaboration. At the same time, it is a striking example of how, with the structural and design limitations of this «soft» and massive building technique, a spatially and tectonically adequate design can be achieved – and how an archaic building technique can be used in a contemporary manner. With today’s renewed focus on energetic and ecological consequences, clay construction, with its special ecological, organic, and aesthetic qualities, is again becoming a subject of widespread interest. The structure presented in this book has received national and international awards and represents a milestone in the field.

Le Corbusier‘s chapel Notre-Dame-du-Haut in Ronchamp is arguably the most famous modern religious building and a UNESCO world heritage site. In this book, Austrian artist Siegrun Appelt takes an entirely new approach to looking at the iconic structure, distinct from all her famous predecessors. Appelt focuses with an utter concentration on details, creating compositions of the highest sensitivity and precision. Her images highlight the place’s spatial structure and lines, Le Corbusier’s ingenious direction of light, as well as surfaces and passages. Given an ideal situation to work with, the Zurich architects Marcel Meili and Markus Peter designed and built a new training and meeting center for Swiss Re in Rüschlikon. Backed by an ambitious client and a substantial budget, they developed an expansive park complex overlooking Lake Zurich and the Bodmer mansion, a protected historical monument, into a setting in which architecture and art, landscape and interior space, old and new combine to form a complex whole. The result is not a manifesto of a particular style but the equally perfect and subtle interpretation of a real place and the programmatic vision it inspires. The Art Commission of Swiss Re chose a "strategy of systematic artistic interventions in existing space". The design of all furniture and interiors was entrusted to the hands of renowned artists and architects. Adolf Krischanitz and Hermann Czech designed the furniture and the "Red Bar" in the Gardener's Lodge. Gilbert Bretterbauer supervised the design and selection of textiles. Artist Günther Förg handled the color design for all of the interiors in the old mansion. The old grounds had been preserved almost entirely in their original condition. The existing stands of trees served as a framework for the detailed design of the park complex by landscape architects Kienast Vogt and Partner. With photographs by Margherita Spiluttini
