In this volume Germany's leading architects consider solutions for revitalizing its urban areas. The yearbook highlights major projects that address housing of all kinds, including singlefamily developments, dormitories, and even floating homes in Berlin and Hamburg. It analyzes recently planned non-residential buildings such as department stores, academic institutions, libraries, and museums, designed for sustainability and flexibility. In addition, the book includes essays on the rediscovery of urban life and one city's fight to preserve a historic structure. This forward-thinking collection of innovative architecture records important trends that have an impact on people not only in Germany, but around the world as well.

Seoul - one of the most densely populated urban areas on the planet. The tremendous pressure this megacity exacts on architecture in terms of spatial intensification, verticalization and amplification, challenges architectural stereotypes and promotes innovation. Megacity Network presents 32 projects by 16 representative Korean architects from the last ten years. Being more like mixtures and hybrids of conventional typologies, these projects range from traditional timber-structure houses to commercial and sports buildings, each one of them meeting the demands of Seoul´s electric urban landscape in its own way. Essays on the urban and architectural background complete the book, making it an exciting overview on the largely unknown new Korean architecture.

Résumé:
From the Tower of Babel to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, from European cathedrals to the Twin Towers and the currently scandalous Freedom Tower, highrises have always been a symbol of mankind's cultural aspirations and technological achievements. The biennial International Highrise Award specifies that an ideal contemporary tower should make exceptional use of aesthetics, design and technology, and show cost-effectiveness, sustainability and integration into town planning. This album of the 2006 contenders honors foremost the winners, Jean Nouvel and Fermin Vasquez, who designed the Torre Agbar building in Barcelona. The Agbar Tower's distinctive rounded crown had already earned it a nominee spot in Cabinet Magazine's Most Phallic Building in the World Contest. Here, the Highrise Award's more serious honor cites the building's "expressive shape," "pulsating dynamism" and "a multi-layer outer skin that generates its varied and exciting appearance." Runners-up include Santiago Calatrava's Turning Torso in Malmo, Sweden.

A co-founder in the 1960s of the influential metabolism movement in Japan, which promoted adaptable structures, Kurokawa has recently articulated his theory of symbiosis, in which he examines the contemporary shift from machine-age values to more organic environments. This retrospective book spans his career, illuminating the continuity, originality, and humanity of his work. Covered here are less-familiar early designs and current undertakings of astounding proportions, like Zhengdong New District in China, a planned city of 15,000 people.

Résumé:
At last architects have discovered the free form shape – multiple curved surfaces, which do not exist in Cartesian geometry. What has long been usual in product design is now being adopted in architecture, these shapes are being generated by special software, and then they are subsequently built. Some young and innovative architectural firms have seized the opportunity to expand the boundaries of architectural space, showing a willingness to experiment with the new technology, and these young architects, or "blobmeister" as Wes Jones rather negatively called them, are now moving on to built examples. In this book, 11 examples from Europe, the USA and Japan are presented, showing that far from being out of touch with reality, cyber-architects do transform their dreams into actual buildings, thus concluding the endless alternatives and possibilities implicit in every design. For it is only built architecture which shows true mastery. This volume extensively documents the complex design process, from the digital conception of the designs, the creation of models, to the final photographs of the building sites and the finished structures. Thematic essays give the reader an insight into the history of the digital scene, assessing its influence on architectural culture to date and evaluating its future potential. The accompanying CD-ROM shows dynamic animations.

Résumé:
Never before have so many high-rises been built. Spectacular skyscrapers with landmark character are not only appearing in boom cities like Dubai and Beijing or in the USA — the high-rise is also experiencing a renaissance in Europe. No type of building generates stronger emotions, but differentiated debate on these tower blocks only began recently. It is no longer merely a question of how many meters tall, but of new qualities in the construction of high-rise buildings, e.g. energy efficiency, sustainability, and social, economic and ecological compatibility. The projects of the International Highrise Award 2008 demonstrate current developments and so present the full range of contemporary high-rise construction, from utilisation to site-specifics.

Résumé:
A monograph on the architectural practice WOHA, known for its environmentally friendly buildings. This first monograph on Singapore-based WOHA uses examples such as open-aired tropical family homes, green permeable high-rises, and a cutting-edge resort on the island of Bali to show how the firm has continued to create innovative, environmentally sensitive structures that blend into their environments, yet maintain aesthetic integrity. Essays in the book explore WOHA's tropical architecture, discuss the Asian understanding of nature, and examine newly designed community spaces. Headed by Wong Mun Summ and Richard Hassell, the practice is making a name internationally for their sophisticated projects, which are presented in this volume. Through numerous illustrations and in-depth essays, this book reveals the innovative, sustainable, and green designs of WOHA.

Résumé:
The architectural scale model has long had an essential role in the design process, creating a tangible, three-dimensional representation of the finished building, but it has not been explored as an artistic medium in its own right. The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) began to fill in this gap in architectural scholarship in 2009, focusing on the history of the model with particular attention paid to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on the museum’s vast collection of models, comprised of more than 1,200 objects created by over four hundred architects from around the world, researchers created both this book and a corresponding exhibit set to open in May 2012. The Architectural Model covers a variety of topics, from the rise of specialized workshops after 1945 to the way in which more sophisticated machinery led to a “Miniature Boom” in the 1950s and ’60s. Of special interest is the discussion of the how working models are used by professionals to develop and change their ideas.
