An energy-efficiency and sustainable building - this was at the core of the brief for this extension to the Tax Office in Enschede, designed by architect Ruurd Roorda. In addition, the identity desired by the Tax Department (business-like, honest, trustworthy) needed expressing in the design. Though new techniques were necessary to achieve results, it is a passive building for all that, with low-tech aspects such as thermal mass, daylight and the use of clay uppermost.
