Résumé:
The Modernist house was a test of modern architects’ ability to meet human needs while fuelling the intellect. "The Modernist home" reveals the striking results of the challenge to fit utopian modernist principles to day-to-day living. The Modernist house dissolved the closed spaces of the traditional home, modernising the bathrooms and kitchens, opening the interior to natural light and providing balconies and terraces for sun-worship and sleeping in the open air. Tim Benton uncovers its elements: from the technology that provided central heating and electric lighting; to new construction materials, such as concrete and steel; to close-ups on features like winter gardens and folding furniture. He opens the door on Modernist houses around the world, from Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, to Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona Pavilion, all fully illustrated with colour photographs and plans.

Résumé:
In 1929, Eileen Gray designed Villa E 1027 for herself and her youthful partner Jean Badovici, but only lived there for three years. Today, the elegant house in Roquebrune-Cap-Mar-tin in southern France is an icon of modernism. In 1937, Le Corbusier discovered the place and the "Maison en Bord de Mer". Inspired by the genius of the place and the light on the Côte d'Azur, he created a total of eight large-format wall paintings there in 1938 and 1939 onwards, some of which complement the building congenially, while others set counterpoints. In 1952, he built his Cabanon nearby and decorated it with murals as well. The book by the well-known architectural historian Tim Benton documents Le Corbusier's artwork at this special place, explores its controversies, and places it in his overall oeuvre.

Résumé:
In this volume, the numerous excerpts, preliminary notes, accompanying drawings, and photographs that Le Corbusier produced in connection with his lectures are presented and contextualized by one of the leading experts on the great architect. In them we see modernism at work. Always a great rhetorician and a master at staging his own persona, Le Corbusier takes the arguments and strategies, seminal ideas and most convincing highlights and fuses them into an architectural conception that every advanced architectural position and practice must still come to terms with today.

Résumé:
Takashi Homma first encountered the work of Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret in Chandigarh in 2013, while producing photographs commissioned by the CCA, some of which are included in this book. Following that experience, he decided to research and photograph the spatial and perceptual richness of windows in other works by Le Corbusier across the world. His research is part of the Windowology program initiated by the Window Research Institute, which aims to define the position of windows in the history of architecture across cultures—in this particular case, their role as spaces, rather than surfaces, that connect the interior of a building and the surrounding landscape, or the private and the public. An essay by Tim Benton complements Homma’s photographs by tracing the evolution of the concept of windows in Le Corbusier’s work.

Résumé:
Like a ship cast on the shore by some Mediterranean tempest, the E 1027 house, built in 1929 by legendary Irish designer Eileen Gray with and for her architect friend Jean Badovici, was little more, seventy years later, than a desolate wreck. But since 2014 an exceptional combination of the knowledge and skills of a whole host of architects and historians, coupled with a harmonious collaboration between public authorities and private initiative, have succeeded in setting the building afloat again. E 1027 can now be seen with all the beauty of its original lines, a white vessel emerging from a lemon grove with its blue awning as a sail. Up till now only familiar through the black and white pictures of the albums of its time, its interiors bring together ingenious pieces of furniture and a collection of chairs, lamps and mirrors which have acquired iconic status, and which have been meticulously restored. The heart of this book is a guided tour through this resuscitated architectural masterpiece, with details of its remarkable furnishings and decoration, all illustrated with the photographs of Manuel Bougot.

Résumé:
Le Corbusier (1887-1965) was born Charles-Edouard Jeanneret in La Chaux-de-Fonds, Switzerland. The self-named Le Corbusier was not only the creator of some of the most important and impressive buildings of the last century--Villa Savoye at Poissy, the Chapel of Notre-Dame-du-Haut at Ronchamp, the capitol complex in Chandigarh, India--he was also an accomplished painter, sculptor, furniture designer, urbanist, and author. His work and social theories continue to be a dominant force in the world of architecture and design, while his elegant bearing, bow tie, and round black eyeglasses are still today a signature look for architects around the world. Le Corbusier Le Grand’s oversized format and luxurious binding reflect the legendary status of this “giant” of twentieth-century architecture and design. The book includes an insightful introductory essay by France’s most authoritative architectural historian and critic, Jean-Louis Cohen, and incisive chapter introductions by highly regarded Le Corbusier scholar Tim Benton. A separate booklet includes translations of documents, many of which have never been translated into English before.
