The inner courtyard of a Moroccan house promises refuge from the bustle of the outside world, while remaining in touch with nature. Reached by a dark and winding passage, the courtyard is the physical and spiritual centre of the house. Green vegetation, flowering plants (in the garden-like Riads), and fountains fed by narrow channels of flowing water provide a cool, shaded enclosure. After a trip to Japan in 1953, Werner Bläser published his landmark book on Classical Japanese architecture. His studies of 17th-18th-century wooden buildings document minimalist, grid-based structures using stark black-and-white photographs, some color photographs and numerous line drawings. His book, highly prized in terms of design and content, contributed significantly to introducing Japanese aesthetics to Western architecture, art and graphics. Mies van der Rohe, for example, gave it to many of his friends. The reprint is enriched by a text on the history of the book by Christian Blaser, Werner Blaser's son, a contribution by Inge Andritz on Mies van der Rohe and Japanese architecture, and a personal afterword by Tadao Ando.

In the years 1988-1995 the Japanese architect Tadao Ando built a museum complex complete with a hotel, restaurant and seminar rooms on the island Naoshima (Kagawa). Constructed out of concrete, its platforms and walls extend far out into the landscape, framing the natural surroundings as a picture. Ando's customary restraint in his selection of materials, and his preference for simple forms which allow the serenity of the surrounding land and seascape to penetrate the rooms are much in evidence in this masterpiece. In this book, Werner Blaser has successfully captured the essence of tranquility so characteristic of Ando's architecture. His photographs are of an extraordinarily beautiful and reflective intensity. In 1952-1953 Mies van der Rohe built the Crown Hall in Chicago: it was to house the College of Architecture on Illinois' Institute of Technology campus. A spectacular building constructed out of steel and glass, it has no interior supports and the roof is suspended from four steel girders. In the Hall free-standing partitions subdivide the space, creating drawing rooms, a library and an exhibition room. The basement is used for offices and workshops. In Crown Hall, Mies van der Rohe's continual search for a clear expression of structure reached its pinnacle, and in this book this epochal building is presented in text and illustrations by Werner Blaser, who has worked together with Mies van der Rohe.

The teachings of Mies van der Rohe and his respect for the effects of space and material has had a great influence on the American architect and artist Gene Summers. Thanks to the technology of the day and Summers’ own creative talents, he was able to help transform Mies’ visions into built structures. For 16 years Gene Summers was a close colleague of Mies, heading his office and working with him on many projects including the Seagram Building in New York, Bacardi’s office buildings in Cuba and Mexico, and Krupps’ offices in Essen. Also working independently, Summers created projects for C.F Murphy Associates, such as the McCormick Convention Centre and the Malcolm X College in Chicago. Later with Ridgway Limited, he was responsible for the the acclaimed restoration of the Biltmore Hotels in Los Angeles. Familiar with bronze as a building material, Summers used his knowledge to design elegant furniture and household objects before devoting himself entirely to producing artworks using this medium. This volume is the first presentation of Gene Summers’ architectural and artistic work, surveying the many areas in which he was active. Phyllis Lambert, founder of the Canadian Centre for Architecture president of the International Confederation of Architectural Museums, provides an enlightening introduction to his work.

Rudolf Steiner (1861–1925), founder of the Anthroposophical Society, was also active in the field of architecture and the arts. His designs for the two Goetheanum buildings at Dornach, near Basel, together with the many residential and functional buildings grouped around them have met with great admiration. In his architecture, Steiner sought to realize a form of building which would reflect his sense of spiritualism, and it is his unusual but innovative use of concrete and his expressive timber forms which are of interest to architects today. This book provides a long-awaited overview of the most significant and interesting buildings on the Goetheanum hill.
