This is a book that students of architecture will want to keep in the studio and in their backpacks. It is also a book they may want to keep out of view of their professors, for it expresses in clear and simple language things that tend to be murky and abstruse in the classroom. These 101 concise lessons in design, drawing, the creative process, and presentation--from the basics of "How to Draw a Line" to the complexities of color theory--provide a much-needed primer in architectural literacy, making concrete what too often is left nebulous or open-ended in the architecture curriculum.

Résumé:
The practice of architecture has become increasingly global, but firms participating in design competitions are finding a culture that is continually in flux. As one of the first two titles in the distinctive "Architecture in Practice" series from Wiley-Academy, this book enables the architect to negotiate the differing rules and processes that govern international competitions. Besides essential strategic material on preparing and presenting an entry, architects will find important tips to help them decide whether to enter a competition. Reviewing the winning case studies, which feature the most recent advances in presentation, graphic design and sustainability, can be a shortcut to success for the design professional. This is an invaluable companion for any architect or student who is intent on growing or establishing their practice.

Socializing architecture: Top-down/bottom-up

Résumé:
Situated at the intersection of architecture, art, public culture, and political theory, ''Socializing architecture'' urges architects and urbanists to intervene in the contested space between public and private interests, to design political and civic processes that mediate top-down and bottom-up urban resources, and to mobilize a new public imagination toward a more just and equitable urbanization. Drawn from decades of lived experience, Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman engage the San Diego–Tijuana border region as a global laboratory to address the central challenges of urbanization today: deepening social and economic inequality, dramatic migratory shifts, explosive urban informality, climate disruption, the thickening of border walls, and the decline of public thinking. ''Socializing architecture'' follows ''Spatializing justice'' (Cruz and Forman, 2022). It is organized into two main sections—essays and projects—and continues to build a compelling case for architects and urban designers to do more than design buildings and physical systems. Through analysis and diverse case studies, the authors show architects and urbanists how to alter the exclusionary policies that produce public crisis and instead realize new political and economic strategies that advance a more equitable and convivial architecture.

Résumé:
Who is Amsterdam, really? This book presents the Dutch capital as experienced by the residents themselves. Many who call Amsterdam home – especially those most often pushed to the margins – translate their experiences into maps, drawings, photos, and graphics. You’ll see streets you’ve not yet walked down, far beyond the historical centre, through the eyes of people you may not have met, but who could be your neighbours. These pages illustrate unsung neighbourhoods, subjective mundanities, vital criticism, and declarations of love, creating a nuanced collection that captures something difficult to quantify or make tangible: how cultures shape a city. Initiated by the Architecture Centre of Amsterdam (Arcam), this book, and the plural realities within it, reflect on how to make the city a better place, for everyone.

Résumé:
Directed by Paolo Portoghesi, the Second Venice Architecture Biennale raised questions about a postmodernity through realms extending south and east from the Mediterranean, where modernity and decolonisation were converging. Translated here for the first time for an English-speaking audience are selected texts by Mehdi Kowsar, Udo Kultermann, and Portoghesi from the original exhibition catalogue, accompanied by additional commentary. Furthermore, Esra Akcan reflects on the historical and socio-political contexts of the exhibition, while Asli Çiçek and Véronique Patteeuw consider the catalogue itself from the perspective of architectural history.

Résumé:
Centred on the Fundación ENAIRE by GFA2, this volume is the opening publication in a new series, ''First works''. Often going untold, the series attempts to package and present the making of early built work of young and emerging architects. It is an effort to make evident not only the finished documents of a building but those that tell the story of how the process was undertaken and the challenges were navigated. Collectively, the series acts as both a repository of emerging work, an opportunity for a young generation of architects to publish, and as a guide of sorts for the generation below them who are yet to complete their own first work. GFA2 is an architectural practice based in Santander, Spain, and Sydney, Australia. Co-founded by Gabriel and Guillermo Fernández-Abascal in 2018, the office approaches design from an intellectual and technical background, simultaneously. GFA2’s collaborative environment enables the delivery of a broad set of projects across various scales and locations. The projects are clear and direct, creating spatial frameworks where contemporary life unfolds in all their complexity.
