These figures were unified by their resistance to the idea that, to be considered modern, art and architecture had to be of its time, as well as by the pivotal role that Yale University held as a backdrop to their thinking. These thinkers sponsored a new kind of approach, one that Eeva-Liisa Pelkonen terms ''untimely,'' emphasizing a departure from a sequential course of events. Ideas about temporal duration, new tradition, the presence of the past, and the shape of time were among the concepts they explored. With an interdisciplinary focus, Pelkonen reveals previously unexplored connections among key figures of American intellectual and artistic culture at midcentury whose works and words would shape modern architecture.

After the Second World War, talented young architects including several from Switzerland, turned to the task of promoting the ideals of Modernism. Their main interest lay in furthering the new design and construction methods which were then being made possible by industrial prefabrication and montage, eve considering and incorporating them at the design stage. The time has now come to review this chapter of recent architectural history. This publication focuses on four architects: Werner Frey (1912-1989), Franz Füeg (born 1921), Jacques Schader (born 1917) and Jacob Zweifel (born 1921). This group of Zurich architects created buildings which can be seen to embody the typical features of the architecture emerging from the late 1950s, 1960s, and early 1970s : fastidious construction methods, a structural approach to designing brought about by increased use of prefabricated parts, an awareness of different social needs of the individual and the group which were subsequently reflected in the designs. Using a wealth of historical illustrations together with photographs by Doris Fanconis and 8 documentary films by Georg Radanowicz, visually interpreting the architecture from a contemporary viewpoint, this book is an invaluable documentation and analysis of those buildings which are of consequence for today's architecture.

In The "Glass state", Annette Fierro views the many meanings of transparency in architecture. Specifically, she analyzes the transparent monumental buildings that were built in Paris between 1981 and 1998 as part of François Mitterrand’s program of Grands Projets. The Grands Projets provide a rare opportunity to study a finite set of buildings constructed of similar materials, in the same time period, in a specific urban landscape, and with related ideological missions. Fierro employs a "discourse of the detail," in which the smallest architectural detail manifests the political, theoretical, and urban contexts of the building’s design and construction. She examines the paradox of the most pared down architectural configurations being used to support the most complex meanings. Intrinsic to Mitterrand’s glass buildings in Paris, for example, is a political concept: the metaphor of accessibility as a means of breaking open cultural institutions previously closed to the public. In addition to the structures of the Grands Projets--the Institut du Monde Arabe, the Grande and Petite Pyramides du Louvre, the glass greenhouses at utopian park projects at La Villette and Andre Citroën, and the Bibliothèque nationale de France--Fierro discusses the Fondation Cartier and two precedent structures, the Centre Georges Pompidou and the Eiffel Tower.
