Résumé:
Louis Le Roy has been working for more than thirty years on an enormous structure in a meadow at the Friesian settlement of Mildam near Heerenveen. There, on a two-hectare site, he piles up with his bare hands paving bricks, paving stones, kerbstones and other discarded street rubble while allowing nature to proceed about him unhindered. Le Roy calls this fascinating jungle populated by large stacked edifices an 'Eco-Cathedral'. Inspired by the Nobel Prize-winner Ilya Prigogine, Le Roy pondered the following question: 'What can one person achieve working with nature in space and time? This book zooms in on those two aspects crucial to his work: space and time. Le Roy's position on these concepts is at odds with the often rapid, super-efficient, function-hugging approach to greenspace and nature in the Netherlands. The Eco-Cathedral is a place where time regains space and space regains time. So the project he began is expected to be continued by others at least until the year 3000. The ideas underpinning Le Roy's project - the importance of the time factor in spatial processes, and working with complex, dynamic systems and networks - make it relevant to current discourse on architecture, urban design and spatial planning.

Résumé:
Telling the story of one of the most important gardens in Europe, created by the internationally celebrated architectural critic and designer Charles Jencks and his late wife, the landscape architect and author Maggie Keswick, this book looks at The Garden of Cosmic Speculation. It is a landscape that celebrates the new sciences of complexity and chaos theory and consists of a series of metaphors exploring the origins, the destiny and the substance of the Universe. The garden is full of ideas, associations, games and memories; Jencks weaves his personal account of the garden's creation into an investigation into the revelations of recent science, using landscape and design to shed light on the way we can now conceive of the Universe. This book is illustrated with year-round photography

"The order of landscape" presents a powerful insight into the work of a forefront figure in contemporary landscape architecture, João Gomes da Silva. Through an extensive duotone photo essay by João Carmo Simões, a collection of texts and a set of plans, the book unveils this seminal body of work. Beginning in 1987, with Álvaro Siza in the Malagueira plan, Gomes da Silva’s career has decisively marked Portuguese contemporary architecture. From Serralves Museum Garden to Madeira’s Seafront Promenade and Lisbon's riverfront, his particular conception of new grounds proposes a formality without formalisms and a naturalness without naturalisms.

Résumé:
For more than twenty-five years, Swiss architects Bernhard Aebi and Pascal Vincent have been running their practice with offices in Bern and Geneva. Housing is one of the firm’s main fields of activity, yet it has also won several high-profile public commissions, such as the restoration and reconstruction of Switzerland’s national parliament building in Bern, the renovation of the Swiss National Bank’s Bern headquarters, and the south wing of Zurich’s main train station. The images by photographers Adrian Scheidegger and Alexander Jaquemet, both longtime companions of the architects, demonstrate how the spaces they created gradually and naturally integrate with their environment. Writer Gianna Molinari joined Scheidegger and Jaquemet on their expeditions to Aebi & Vincent’s buildings. Her literary snapshots supplement the images in this volume, stimulating our imagination of the inner life of these structures and their occupants.

Nelson Byrd Woltz (NBW) is one of the most in-demand and respected firms working in landscape architecture today with major commissions across the United States. This collection of twelve projects illustrates the power of design to create vital public realms at the heart of communities. Through the celebrated firm’s process, ecological and cultural histories are revealed and integrated into meaningful public experiences. The firm has worked with exceptionally sensitive sites across the United States, including those that hold the vital histories of enslaved peoples, the rich cultures of indigenous peoples, and the natural habitats that have been threatened by infrastructure and construction.
