Computer and video games are leaving the PC and conquering the arena of everyday life in the form of mobile applications (such as GPS cell phones, etc.) the result is new types of cities and architecture. How do these games alter our perception of real and virtual space? What can the designers of physical and digital worlds learn from one another? Space Time Play presents the following themes: the superimposition of computer games on real spaces and convergences of real and imaginary playspaces; computer and video games as practical planning instruments. With articles by Espen Aarseth, Ernest Adams, Richard A. Bartle, Ian Bogost, Gerhard M. Buurman, Edward Castranova, Kees Christiaanse, Drew Davidson, James Der Derian, Noah Falstein, Stephen Graham, Ludger Hovestadt, Henry Jenkins, Heather Kelley, James Korris, Julian Kücklich, Frank Lantz, Lev Manovich, Jane McGonigal, William J. Résumé:
The Far Eastern International Digital Design Award (The Feidad Award) was conferred for the first time in 2000, its aim being to encourage and honour innovative design created with the aid of digital media. In 2006, the jury which comprised Greg Lynn (Greg Lynn FORM), Marcos Novak, Jacob van Rijs (MVRDV), Birger Sevaldson (Ocean North), and other distinguished architects, awarded the prize for the sixth time. This book presents the 52 best projects by architects, students and designers worldwide. It explores digital concepts such as computing, information, electronic media, hyper-, virtual-, and cyberspace in order to help define and discuss future space and architecture in the digital age. Fully documented in text and colour illustrations, these award-winning projects provide an excellent overview of the very latest international developments in digital design and an invaluable source-book for all who make use of new media in their work. As special treat "stars” like Tadao Ando, Zaha Hadid, Toyo Ito, Fernando Menis, Asymptote, Diller+Scofidio, OCEAN-north, MVRDV and UN Studio were invited to submit projects for this edition.

Artificial neuronal networks open up radical new pathways for image creation. On the basis of textual prompts, machine-learning algorithms like Midjourney and Stable Diffusion generate imagery that is simultaneously familiar and alien. Graphic designer Floyd Schulze uses this rapidly developing technology to recreate architectural icons. In an accompanying essay, Georg Vrachliotis takes up the topic on the theoretical level. ''Hey Computer!'' is the first book to deal with AI-generated architectural imagery from an artistic perspective.

Résumé:
Computer-aided design (CAD) technology has already changed the practice of architecture, and it has the potential to change it even more radically. With Architecture's New Media, Yehuda Kalay offers a comprehensive exposition of the principles, methods, and practices that underlie architectural computing. He discusses the aspects of information technology that are pertinent to architectural design, analyzes the benefits and drawbacks of particular computational methods, and looks at the potential of emerging computational techniques to affect the future of architectural design.

Résumé:
Digital currencies (cryptocurrencies) and digital property require large amounts of land, resources, and data centers and infrastructures to store these ''supplies''. There is a larger architectural and urban infrastructural challenge and urgency on how these various kinds of digital exchanges are mediated, to limit the detrimental use of our everyday resources. Using a mixed-media approach, this book couples a novel exploration of XR (mixed-reality) and AR (augmented reality) into several parts of the book. To prolong the shelf-life of emergent data and case-studies on the topic, the book is complemented with an open-access digital platform for readers to access video interviews with the industry experts, diagrammatic mapping and graphical cartography, and 3D artifacts that shows how data interacts with phygital properties.

Résumé:
How a protean mathematical object, the graph, ushered in new images, tools, and infrastructures for design and catalyzed a digital future for architecture. In "Graph vision", Theodora Vardouli offers a fresh history of architecture's early entanglements with modern mathematics and digital computing by focusing on a hidden protagonist: the graph. Fueled by iconoclastic sentiments and skepticism of geometric depiction, architects, she explains, turned to the skeletal underpinnings of their work, and with it the graph, as a site of representation, operation, and political possibility. Taking the reader on an enthralling journey through a polyvalent mathematical entity, Vardouli combines close readings of graphs' architectural manifestations as images, tools, and infrastructures for design with original archival work on research centers that spearheaded mathematical and computational approaches to architecture.

Résumé:
"Also known as" offers analogies between objects and architecture, finding shared structures in physical things and architectural ideas, to render ideas relevant to a broad design audience. In this collection of written and visual work, Michelle JaJa Chang bridges conceptual frameworks found in architectural design and contemporary representation to examine design technology's social, material, and political effects. In architectural practice, where visual representation typically precedes building, techniques like drawing and imaging do not merely structure appearances. They are schemas, or organizational theories, connecting the abstract to the real. Buildings evidence representation's abilities to show how something is (through description) and how things should be (through projection).
