Résumé:
Since its launch in 1976, the influential journal of art history and criticism October has not had one image reproduced in color. Well-known contemporary Scottish artist and writer David Batchelor playfully rectifies this situation in the series of delightful, exuberant and colorful drawings (2012 13) that transform every page of the magazine s first issue (Summer 1976). Disrupting October s orderly monochromatic universe and textual clarity, Batchelor engages a carnival-like play of form and color on each page in abstract compositions of circles, triangles and rectangles of brilliant transparent color and opaque black planes

Résumé:
The Colour Journal is not simply another publication about the meaning of colour. Colours have not been approached in a literal way but as a starting point, a pretext to tell bigger stories, a means of revealing the story within the story: we all know Henri Matisse's Blue Nudes, but who can say the same about Biskra, the forgotten Algerian oasis that inspired him? We may also know about the ultramarine pigment that Yves Klein patented, but who has heard of Edouard Adam, a merchant in Montparnasse who discovered its formula? The Colour Journal intends to fight against the dictatorship of immediacy, to give depth to the pretty images of fashion magazines and Instagram feeds, to delve into familiar moments of art history and discover what lies beneath, to dig into museum libraries and reveal unseen treasures. To bring this enterprise to life, The Colour Journal travelled from Idaho to Guangxi, from antiquity to the present day, to bring you a dialogue between forgotten archives and contemporary photography: follow a denim hunter in the American West, visit one of China's last cultural minorities, peek into Helmut Newton's private collection of Polaroids and dive into David Hockney's chlorinated swimming pools.

Résumé:
"Interaction of color" is often presented as an overarching theory of color, but it is actually a method of learning how to better see and understand color—many of the color exercises illustrated in "Interaction of color" were devised by Albers’s students: cutting and pasting, looking, pondering, and learning. This workbook companion is a teaching tool designed to enable readers to engage in the kinds of tactile creativity and exploration that characterized Albers’s own classroom. Focusing on eight of the most important lessons in "Interaction of color", this book invites readers to learn by doing, using only simple materials. Core instructions for each exercise are enhanced by additional tips, references to Albers’s original text and illustrations, and stories about how Albers presented the ideas in class. The book and exercises are sufficiently nuanced to challenge and inspire seasoned artists, designers, and educators while also being readily accessible to younger readers and less-experienced practitioners.

The central argument of "Chromophobia" is that a chromophobic impulse – a fear of corruption or contamination through colour – lurks within much Western cultural and intellectual thought. This is apparent in the many and varied attempts to purge colour, either by making it the property of some 'foreign body' – the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar, or the(...)

Résumé:
The central argument of "Chromophobia" is that a chromophobic impulse – a fear of corruption or contamination through colour – lurks within much Western cultural and intellectual thought. This is apparent in the many and varied attempts to purge colour, either by making it the property of some 'foreign body' – the oriental, the feminine, the infantile, the vulgar, or the pathological – or by relegating it to the realm of the superficial, the supplementary, the inessential, or the cosmetic. Chromophobia has been a cultural phenomenon since ancient Greek times; this book is concerned with forms of resistance to it. Writers have tended to look no further than the end of the nineteenth century. David Batchelor seeks to go beyond the limits of earlier studies, analysing the motivations behind chromophobia and considering the work of writers and artists who have been prepared to look at colour as a positive value. Exploring a wide range of imagery including Melville's 'great white whale', Huxley's reflections on mescaline, and Le Corbusier's 'journey to the East', Batchelor also discusses the use of colour in Pop, Minimal, and more recent art.

Résumé:
280 mostly full page color illustrations. Text by Ann Temkin, Briony Fer. Melissa Ho, Nora Lawrence. Published to accompany a major exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art, New York, this volume begins with Marcel Duchamp’s Tu m’, the artist’s final painting, made in 1918, with its long array of color samples looming across the canvas. This early recognition of color’s commercial nature was fully explored more than three decades later by artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Andy Warhol, Gerhard Richter and Alighiero Boetti, who in the 1950s to the 1970s, with a host of others, redefined the parameters of color from a matter of personal expression to one of arbitrary systems and random processes. The repercussions of this transformation continue to be felt into the twenty-first century, in work by artists including Sherrie Levine, Mike Kelley and Damien Hirst, as well as others who explore color in digital technology This volume traces the lineage of the questions provoked by color’s new status, and the variety of answers that have resulted.
