Résumé:
As the connection between data and building materials grows ever closer, with digital information not just informing plans but actually being used to create the material that will construct a building—robots are necessarily playing a large role in architecture. Yet the use of robots in architecture has not been treated comprehensively until now.The Robotic Touch features more than thirty research projects on robots in architecture originating at ETH Zurich, documenting various methods and concepts relating to the use of robots in architecture. In particular, The Robotic Touch offers the first full analysis of the material and constructive aspects of robot-based building projects—and draws out the implications for architectural design on the growing use of robots.

Résumé:
Going beyond current scholarship on the media city and the smart city, Shannon Mattern argues that our global cities have been mediated and intelligent for millennia. Deep Mapping the Media City advocates for urban media archaeology, a multisensory approach to investigating the material history of networked cities.

Résumé:
Interspace investigates the spatial and social consequences of a data-driven society where personalised information flows produce a multitude of personalised readings of the collective sphere and thus, the role of public space is to be questioned. Accompanied by a new understanding about authorship and new techniques of design, this participatory model calls out for new ways of organising spaces. With regard to the changes that the last substantial structural transformation of the public – web 2.0 – has brought along in architecture, Interspace analyses what has architecture got to do with big data and what is the architects’ role at the time when their expertise is being challenged by digital technologies.

Résumé:
Computer and video games are leaving the PC and conquering the arena of everyday life in the form of mobile applications (such as GPS cell phones, etc.) the result is new types of cities and architecture. How do these games alter our perception of real and virtual space? What can the designers of physical and digital worlds learn from one another? Space Time Play presents the following themes: the superimposition of computer games on real spaces and convergences of real and imaginary playspaces; computer and video games as practical planning instruments. With articles by Espen Aarseth, Ernest Adams, Richard A. Bartle, Ian Bogost, Gerhard M. Buurman, Edward Castranova, Kees Christiaanse, Drew Davidson, James Der Derian, Noah Falstein, Stephen Graham, Ludger Hovestadt, Henry Jenkins, Heather Kelley, James Korris, Julian Kücklich, Frank Lantz, Lev Manovich, Jane McGonigal, William J. Résumé:
Research in and on architecture is as complex as the discipline itself with its different specialist fields, and therefore the results often remain unconnected. This publication combines digital and analog research issues and demonstrates how important cross-disciplinary cooperation in architecture is today. The complexity and increasing specialization are elaborated on in the various chapters and then linked to the core of architecture, i.e. design. Scientists from the theoretical and practical fields present research results in the following subjects: "design methodology", "architectural space, perception, and the human body", "analog and digital timber construction", "visualization", "robotics", "architectural practice and research", and "sustainability".

Résumé:
These days, a computer is as much a part of every household's standard equipment as a refrigerator, and yet the explosion of computer technology in the last several decades has transformed the daily life of every member of society far more than even utopians would ever have allowed themselves to dream. No wonder, then, that from design to production, architecture too is becoming more and more subject to digital influences. The range of those influences stretches from the classical computer programs used in design and presentation to media-supported design processes all the way to computerized production techniques, to say nothing of industrialized bricklayer "robots." From measurement to planning and production, archi-tecture is the product of a closely coordinated digital pro-cess chain. What influence do digital design and production methods have on contemporary architecture? How are these new methods changing architecture and the way it is created? Where does the potential of digital media for architecture lie? What are the areas in which every individual firm can begin to use them? What are the advantages of working electronically? How and at what cost can these methods be integrated into the day-to-day work of the professional architect? This publication offers answers to these and many other questions on all aspects of the digital design and construction process.
