Résumé:
Room 4.1.3, an Australian landscape architecture firm, is renowned for producing some of the world's most finely tuned design work, striking a balance between theory and praxis, design and planning. The firm's projects engage visitors in a way that few public spaces have before. Founded in the 1990s by Richard Weller and Vladimir Sitta, Room 4.1.3 has received awards in more than forty open design competitions and is currently at work on a new city in Singapore, "fusion-polis." Adopting a new proscriptive approach, the designs exhibit a strong theoretical base that extends into cultural studies, art, geography, anthropology, and psychology. For example, the controversial Garden of Australian Dreams at the National Museum of Australia in Canberra is a veritable playground of meanings, invoking events of such varying cultural significance as the birth of Australia as a nation and the work of Jackson Pollock. This lavishly illustrated volume features many other award-winning Room 4.1.3 designs, including Namesti Miru in Prague, Potsdamer Platz in Berlin, and Gallipoli Peace Park in Turkey. Internationally renowned scholars and critics provide essays that contextualize each project and ultimately argue for the primacy and efficacy of poetic and subversive imagination in the formation of our environment. The works collected here, both built and unbuilt, will introduce Room 4.1.3's iconic style to an ever-widening audience in North America and open up an international discourse on new meanings of landscape architecture.

"Shallow Water Dictionary" is both a celebration of the richness of our vernacular language and a lament on its passing - and with it, the passing of the words we need to understand our shallow water regions, once the primary landscape of America and now facing extinction, both physical and linguistic. This small book is an intriguing and valuable addition to our knowledge of a changing landscape. Literary, etymological, historical, and vernacular investigations of such varied terms as "guzzle," "creek," and "chartreuse," Stilgoe's definitions are lyric explanations of words whose original meanings have been eroded by time.

Résumé:
In the early 1990s the design and creation of the Central Garden at the Getty Center were entrusted to the distinguished contemporary visual artist Robert Irwin. Irwin, a member of California's "light and space" movement, was an unexpected choice for this major commission, and his work has aroused intense interest in the art world and among gardening enthusiasts and visitors to the Getty Center. In "Robert Irwin Getty Garden", Lawrence Weschler offers a lively account of the creation of what Irwin has playfully termed "a sculpture in the form of a garden aspiring to be art." Weschler's narrative is followed by a transcript of conversations in which he and Irwin, in a series of walks through the garden, discuss in detail the decisions, both philosophical and practical, that shaped the making of this major art work in Southern California. The book contains more than 150 colour illustrations, many of them specially commissioned from photographer Becky Cohen.

Résumé:
This book examines the fierce debate on the styles and forms of garden design that took place in England c. 1870–1914. Focusing on the wild garden, the cottage garden, the formal garden and the synthesis of the formal and natural styles, Anne Helmreich argues that design principles and debates between designers including William Robinson, Reginald Blomfield, Gertrude Jekyll, and Edwin Lutyens, were indelibly shaped by the quest for a powerful English national identity. She demonstrates how ‘Englishness’ was purportedly expressed through the leading styles of garden design and why the garden was promoted as a symbol of national identity. A wide range of cultural practices and institutions, from garden treatises, popular journals, historic preservation organizations, art exhibitions, and two world’s fairs, are investigated to reveal how the garden, as a physical artifact and as an idea, circulated widely to produce a unifying national image.

Résumé:
One of the central figures in modern landscape architecture, Garrett Eckbo (1910-2000) was a major influence in the field during an active career spanning five decades. While most of the early American designers concentrated on the private garden and the corporate landscape, Eckbo's work demonstrated innovative design ideas in a social setting. This engagement with social improvement has stayed with Eckbo throughout his life, distinguishing both his intentions and achievements, from his early work for the Farm Security Administration to his partnerships (including one of the most prominent landscape firms in the world, Eckbo, Dean, Austin, and Williams--EDAW) and his years as chair of the Department of Landscape Architecture at the University of California, Berkeley. In this book that includes more than 100 of Eckbo's designs, Marc Treib examines the aesthetic formation of Eckbo's manner, and by implication the broader field of landscape architecture since the 1930s. Dorothée Imbert writes about Eckbo's social vision, including his belief that ultimately, landscape design is the "arrangement of environments for people." The book also contains a biographical and professional chronology and a complete bibliography of publications by and about Garrett Eckbo.
