Résumé:
Swiss artists Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann have been collaborating since 1990, gaining international recognition as Lang/Baumann (or L/B). Their collaborative work comprises installations, sculptures, murals, and floor paintings, as well as architectural interventions. Models play a key role in their creative process. A model can serve three purposes: a quick three-dimensional sketch, a working model to test a concept, or a presentation to show the result once the design process is complete. L/B use all three types. This book brings together for the first time all the models that L/B have made for the projects they have pursued over thirty-three years. It forms a complete catalog of their oeuvre to date in miniature format, also featuring projects that were never developed beyond the model stage. Nearly one hundred and twenty color illustrations are supplemented by two essays on iconography in Lang/Baumann’s work and on the playful aspect of model making. A conversation with Sabina Lang and Daniel Baumann rounds off the book.

Résumé:
Modeling History revisits the material legacy of Kenneth Frampton's course Studies in Tectonic Culture, a collection of models familiar to anyone who has passed through Avery Hall. It looks back in order to project forward, and asks how the construction of architectural history through the making of models might generate new histories, practices, and ways of seeing. Produced on the occasion of the exhibition 'Stagecraft: Models and Photos' at Columbia University's Arthur RossArchitecture Gallery, Modeling History moves between modes of representation, past and present, to explore Frampton's theory and pedagogy concerning tectonics. The sixteen photographs enclosed in this book by photographer James Ewing reveal the possibilities of Frampton's radical approach today. Each image not only reengages with a model built during Frampton's seminar, but, by playing with the potentials of photography, also aspires to project similar material, tectonic, and poetic realities. Printed in a limited edition of 250 copies.

This publication pays tribute to two important systems of architectural representation: the model and the photograph. Rescuing over 100 original photographs of outstanding models - some eventually realized, and some that would remain unbuilt - from 20th-century Spain, this volume offers a modern, visual, critical and historiographical discourse on Spanish architecture from this rich period after the First World War. Beyond the analysis of the models’ technical and compositional structure, the book includes sample pictures by photographers such as Francesc Català-Roca, Joaquín del Palacio (Kindel), Juan Pando, Martin Lladó, Oriol Maspons Ubiña Gomez and Ramón Massats, and architects such as José Manuel Aizpurúa, Alejandro de la Sota and Fernando Higueras.

Modelling Time: The Permanent Collection 1925–2014 chronicles the exhibition Model as Ruin at the House of Artists in Oslo, November 1 – December 15, 2013. Together with master students from the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, Mari Hvattum and Mari Lending brought a unique, modernist model collection out of the archives, re-exhibiting it at the venue that once hosted its biggest ever display in 1931. The collection testifies to a different modernism; not white and austere but colourful, diverse, and full of detail. Modelling Time gives an in-depth portrayal of the so-called ‘Permanent Collection’ of Norwegian scale models, photographs and drawings, tracing its international trajectory of exhibitions from Brussels in 1927 to its last appearance at the World’s Fair in New York in 1939. The book documents the collection’s heydays as part of a vivid international modernist culture, as well as its archival diaspora as it falls into oblivion after WWII. In an extensive, archive-based essay editors Lending and Hvattum give the full context of the collection, while Juliane Derry and Jorge Otero-Pailos look into the models’ materiality and issues of decay. Model scholars and architecture curators Barry Bergdoll, Carson Chan, Pippo Ciorra, Oliver Elser, Juliet Koss, Andres Lepik, Adam Lowe, Wallis Miller, Jorge Otero-Pailos, Léa-Catherine Szacka, and Victor Plathe Tschudi presents a variety of perspectives inspired by the Oslo collection.
