Résumé:
Using theoretical models and extensive archival research, Lianne McTavish examines the case of Canada's oldest continuing public museum, the New Brunswick Museum in Saint John. Focusing on the period between 1842 and the 1950s, McTavish addresses topics such as the transnational exchange of objects between museums, efforts by women to claim space within the organization, the creation of Carnegie libraries, and the rising status of curators. Shedding light on many topics of current interest, especially the commodification and globalization of museums, this study makes a lively contribution to museum studies and cultural studies.

Résumé:
Making a Museum in the 21st Century addresses some of the most pressing issues for museums in a new era of popularity and audience engagement. Over the past decade, spectacular buildings and increased attendance have been accompanied by increased expectations for museums to create new ways for visitors to interact with art. Against a backdrop of large demographic shifts and geopolitical shuffles resulting in rapid museum growth in Asia and the Middle East, museums around the world face new opportunities and challenges. This book brings together the perspectives of prominent museum leaders, directors, curators, architects and artists such as David Adjaye, Melissa Chiu (the Hirshhorn), Adam Lerner (MCA Denver), Glenn Lowry (MoMA), Walid Raad (Cooper Union), Hiroshi Sugimoto and others.

Résumé:
A show challenging conventional understandings of public art, Culture in Action in Chicago had a new social agenda, and rethought what an exhibition of contemporary art might be. Through eight projects by artists initiated in the early 1990s and developed in collaboration with local people, the intention was to engage diverse groups over time, in addition to the visiting public in 1993. In the fifth book in Afterall's Exhibition Histories series, the course of these projects is documented, with critical reappraisal of this important exhibition in newly commissioned essays and interviews, together with reviews from the time.
