Résumé:
This volume provides one of the first overviews of Japanese photography to be published in English. Drawing on extensive research, Lena Fritsch traces the development of Japanese photography chronologically, from the severity of post-war Realism to the diverse ingenuity of photography in contemporary Japan. Interspersed are original interviews with some of the most influential photographers of each era, including Daido Moriyama. ''Ravens and Red Lipstick'' offers a survey of Japanese photography's recent history. Fritsch masterfully frames each movement with their business, education, and art-institutional backdrops- she shows the consumerism and intense political debates of 1960s and '70s Japan, for example, to be central to the rough style of the ''Provoke'' artists.

Résumé:
At the New Bauhaus and what later became the Institute of Design in Chicago, teachers like László Moholy-Nagy and György Kepes, and later Arthur Siegel, Harry Callahan, and Aaron Siskind, molded generations of groundbreaking photographers. This collection introduces the protagonists and institutions who have inspired, created, collected, and exhibited photography since the founding of the New Bauhaus in 1937. Surveying eighty years of photography from Chicago, the wide range of illustrations in this volume extend from conceptual and process-oriented series to material experiments and abstract photograms, and include contemporary works that reflect the continued importance of the Bauhaus school of thought in the present day. Marking the hundredth anniversary of the Bauhaus, this richly illustrated volume celebrates a school of photography that made history on both sides of the Atlantic.

Résumé:
John Ruskin was an influential English art critic and social thinker of the Victorian era, who famously argued that the principal concern of the artist is “truth to nature.” For Ruskin, this truth entailed more than merely adept technical representation, but rather, should depict the natural world as mankind experiences it, with all the sensations of both beauty and terror it elicits. Today, in a world overwhelmed by industrial development and environmental uncertainty, contemporary artists are discovering new beauties and terrors associated with nature, invoking a sense of the sublime that is uniquely modern. "Landscapes after Ruskin" explores how a joyful experience of nature is now mixed with a particular dread as the earth and its atmosphere are increasingly touched by human activity.

Résumé:
Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. ''The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography'' is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms.

Résumé:
How a small photography club gave birth to modernist photography in Brazil. Published in conjunction with the first major museum exhibition of Brazilian modernist photography outside of Brazil, ''Fotoclubismo'' presents the groundbreaking creative achievements of São Paulo’s Foto-Cine Clube Bandeirante, a group of amateur photographers founded in 1939 that is essentially unknown today to European and North American audiences. The vast majority of FCCB members pursued photography outside of their day jobs as lawyers, businessmen, accountants, journalists, engineers, biologists and bankers, but they were nonetheless quite serious about their artistic ambition. Their radical experimentations with process and form and their determination to distill inventive compositions from everyday life contributed to their esteemed reputation within an active international postwar scene—a status that has been all but forgotten.

Résumé:
It is the seemingly peripheral details and gestures that anchor this collection of images. Like the building they document, these photographs of the Drawing Matter Archive at the Shatwell Farm in Somerset are reflections of the project’s backgrounds, contextual minutiae, and footnotes. Taking the form of a three-way conversation between Hugh Strange (the archive’s architect), photographer Max Creasy, and architect and academic Elizabeth Hatz, this book offers a subtly poetic and expansive examination of the building, the collection it houses, and its place in the surrounding farm, as well as a wider evaluation of the built form.
