Résumé:
Twenty Houses by Twenty Architects presents twenty houses located in very diverse geographical settings and designed by figures with an established international reputation - including Glenn Murcutt, Steven Holl, Tod Williams and Billie Tsien, Richard Meier and Rem Kollhaas - as well as by emerging young architects. Technical data, plans and a biographical profile of the architect are presented for each home, along with the project report. The discussion of the architecture also raises an investigation of the profound changes that are now taking place in the institution of the family, in its makeup, in the rhythms of its daily life and in the forms of its leisure and work.

The Case Study House program (1945–1966) was an exceptional, innovative event in the history of American architecture. The program, which concentrated on the Los Angeles area and oversaw the design of 36 prototype homes, sought to make available plans for modern residences that could be easily and cheaply constructed during the postwar building boom. Highly experimental, the program generated houses that were designed to redefine the modern home, and thus had a pronounced influence on architecture—American and international—both during the program’s existence and even to this day. With over 150 photos and plans and a map of where all houses are (or were) located.
