In 1929, the great Swiss historian and architecture critic Sigfried Giedion (1888–1968)—later the author of the classics "Space, Time and Architecture" (1941) and "Mechanization Takes Command" (1948)—issued Befreites Wohnen (Liberated Dwelling), a small but vocal architecture manifesto and an early expression of modernist housing ideology. From the vision of an international architectural modernism (a mission with which Giedion was involved as the first secretary-general of the International Congresses of Modern Architecture, between 1928 and 1959) to debates on the industrialization of construction processes and their impact on public housing, Liberated Dwelling expresses the dreams and anxieties of early 20th-century modernist architecture.

Résumé:
In recent years, the specific formats and challenges of exhibiting architecture and design, both built and speculative, have often been used as critical devices for identifying, communicating, and convening the public around shared matters of concern. These have increasingly included urgent questions of equity and justice, labor, gender, race, class, community, and lifestyle in relation to spatial issues of density, economy, policy, infrastructure, climate, and sustainability. This book records a discussion of critical approaches to the representation of architecture through conversations with seven contemporary curators working inside and outside of the museum. Mario Ballesteros (Archivo Diseño y Arquitectura), Giovanna Borasi (Canadian Center for Architecture), Ann Lui (Future Firm), Ana Miljacki (Critical Broadcasting Lab, MIT), Zoë Ryan (ICA, University of Pennsylvania), Martino Stierli (Museum of Modern Art), and Shirley Surya (M+, Hong Kong) speculate on the specific challenges and potentials of exhibiting space.

Résumé:
Archetypes features a recent series by Canadian artist David K. Ross, who works at the interface of photography, film, and installation. His images of architectural mock-ups, staged at night with dramatic lighting that isolates structures from their surroundings, demonstrate how these objects have become a charged form of proto-architecture. They also change how we view the practice of architecture by documenting and framing unseen aspects of its emergence. Built at full scale, these architectural fragments—to be removed from construction sites as buildings near completion—ensure that a project can be executed exactly to design, and they provide clients with a simulation of a building that leaves little space for speculation. The task of mock-up documentation is usually left to architects and contractors, who take quick snapshots for their reference during site visits. The book offers a platform to consider what it means to pre-construct fragments of buildings in all their complexity.
