Résumé:
Fifty of the world’s greatest writers share their views in collaboration with the artist Matteo Pericoli, expanding our own views on place, creativity, and the meaning of home All of us, at some point in our daily lives, have found ourselves looking out the window. We pause in our work, tune out of a conversation, and turn toward the outside. Our eyes simply gaze, without seeing, at a landscape whose familiarity becomes the customary ground for distraction: the usual rooftops, the familiar trees, a distant crane. The way of life for most of us in the twenty-first century means that we spend most of our time indoors, in an urban environment, and our awareness of the outside world comes via, and thanks to, a framed glass hole in the wall.

Résumé:
In partnership with his wife Marilyn Mackay-Lyons and their family, architect Brian Mackay-Lyons has built a unique community over the granite ruins of a historic settlement on the fogbound coast of Nova Scotia. Among the structures at Shobac are homes, barns, studios, cottages, fishing shacks, a boathouse, even a schoolhouse, all designed in Mackay-Lyons's compelling architectural language that fuses contemporary Modernism with Nova Scotia building traditions. SkyRoom is written in a new genre that Gaudet calls magic architectural realism, blending fact with historical fiction in presenting the lives of early inhabitants and visitors to the Shobac area, including Samuel de Champlain, a Mi'kmaq mystic, an Acadian carpenter and other lively characters whose ghostly presence swirl in the untold myths of this coastal Shangri-La. More provocatively, Gaudet orchestrates imaginary conversations between Mackay-Lyons and legendary figures in architecture - Frank Lloyd Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Louis Kahn, Charles Moore and others - all towards providing a novel perspective on what goes into building communities and homes worth living in.

Quality living in old age is one of the important topics of our time. Architects and builders can contribute innovative types of housing, intelligent concepts for barrier-free buildings, and advanced systems of care for people who are fragile or suffering from dementia. Intelligent design solutions can push back the limits on housing and care, on residential architecture and care facilities, on individual, collective, and assisted forms of housing, and even on the various phases of life in favor of a comprehensive trend toward integrated forms of housing. This volume in the series Design Manuals optimizes the concept, content, and presentation of the series to improve its use by the customer. A third of the volume provides detailed expert information from around fifteen contributors, including general questions of energy management and sustainability, open space, and product design. A section of examples provides a building typology, presenting approximately forty international buildings in analyses of up to eight pages that offer exemplary solutions for multigenerational buildings, assisted living, housing for people with dementia and other special target groups, old persons’ homes, nursing homes, and integrated projects.

Housing for the people: what opportunities exist for this democratic ideal now that the scope for publicly funded architecture is being curtailed in so many countries by the free market? Who are breaking the boundaries to create innovative housing stock? Are attitudes changing towards what is possible? How are the employment of pre-fabrication techniques, materials and information technologies being harnessed? Or could the new alliances that are being hammered out between designers and housebuilders signal the onset of a new era of design-conscious private mass housing? With contributors writing on six distinct geographical areas –Australia, Japan, The Netherlands, Sweden, the UK and the UK – as well as emergency dwellings, a worldwide perspective is established. Résumé:
We experience spaces not only by seeing but also by listening. We can navigate a room in the dark, and "hear" the emptiness of a house without furniture. Our experience of music in a concert hall depends on whether we sit in the front row or under the balcony. The unique acoustics of religious spaces acquire symbolic meaning. Social relationships are strongly influenced by the way that space changes sound. In Spaces Speak, Are You Listening?, Barry Blesser and Linda-Ruth Salter examine auditory spatial awareness: experiencing space by attentive listening. Every environment has an aural architecture. The audible attributes of physical space have always contributed to the fabric of human culture, as demonstrated by prehistoric multimedia cave paintings, classical Greek open-air theaters, Gothic cathedrals, acoustic geography of French villages, modern music reproduction, and virtual spaces in home theaters. Auditory spatial awareness is a prism that reveals a culture's attitudes toward hearing and space. Some listeners can learn to "see" objects with their ears, but even without training, we can all hear spatial geometry such as an open door or low ceiling. Integrating contributions from a wide range of disciplines--including architecture, music, acoustics, evolution, anthropology, cognitive psychology, audio engineering, and many others--Spaces Speak, Are You Listening? establishes the concepts and language of aural architecture. These concepts provide an interdisciplinary guide for anyone interested in gaining a better understanding of how space enhances our well-being. Aural architecture is not the exclusive domain of specialists. Accidentally or intentionally, we all function as aural architects.

Résumé:
Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers declare the dawn of a new cultural era, as we transition from modernity to sustainity - towards a world that is more connected, more localist, more digital and more sustainable. As the authors of this manifesto argue, "sustainism marks a shift not only in thinking and doing but in collective perception - of how we live, do business, feed ourselves, design, travel and communicate, as much as how we deal with nature." In the twentieth century, whether we knew it or not, our world was shaped by modernist values, from the design of our cities to our homes, technologies and our conceptions of progress. Sustainism recasts our relationship to all of these things, binding ecological issues to a larger picture of our world. Through a series of graphically dynamic aphorisms, quotes and symbols designed for worldwide use by businesses, individuals and institutions, to signal support for sustainism, Michiel Schwarz and Joost Elffers show how the movement is already reshaping global culture, technology, food and media. With this concise manifesto, they launch the term sustainism into the public consciousness. The sustainist era has begun.

Résumé:
"The Stairway to the Sun & Dance of the Comets" brings together two short books, originally published in 1903, by the anti-erotic godfather of German science fiction, Paul Scheerbart. "The Stairway to the Sun" consists of four fairy tales of sun, sea, animals, and storm, each set in a different, fantastical locale: from the giant fever-dream palace of an astral star to a dwarf’s glass underwater lair in the jellyfish kingdom. Scheerbart’s sad, whimsical tales provide gentle, simple, though unexpected morals that outline his work as a whole: treat animals as one would treat oneself, mutual admiration will never lead to harm, and if one is able to remember that the world is grand, one will never be sad in one’s own life. "Dance of the Comets", though published as an “Astral Pantomime,” was originally conceived as a scenario for a ballet, and one that Richard Strauss had planned to score in 1900 (and which Gustav Mahler even accepted for the Vienna Opera). Though the project was never realized, Scheerbart’s written choreography of dance, gesture, costume, feather dusters, violet moon hair, and a variety of stars and planets outlines a symbolic sequence of events in which everyone—enthusiastic maid, temperamental king, indifferent executioner, foolish poet—seeks, joins, and in some cases, becomes a celestial body: a “dance” toward higher aspirations and a staging of Scheerbart’s lifelong yearning for a home in the universe.

Résumé:
Cities are birthplaces of civilization; centers of culture, trade, and progress; cauldrons of opportunity—and the home of eighty percent of the world’s population by 2050. As the 21st century progresses, metropolitan areas will bear the brunt of global megatrends such as climate change, natural resource depletion, population growth, income inequality, mass migrations, education and health disparities, among many others. In The Well-Tempered City, Jonathan F. P. Rose—the man who “repairs the fabric of cities”—distills a lifetime of interdisciplinary research and firsthand experience into a five-pronged model for how to design and reshape our cities with the goal of equalizing their landscape of opportunity. Drawing from the musical concept of “temperament” as a way to achieve harmony, Rose argues that well-tempered cities can be infused with systems that bend the arc of their development toward equality, resilience, adaptability, well-being, and the ever-unfolding harmony between civilization and nature. These goals may never be fully achieved, but our cities will be richer and happier if we aspire to them, and if we infuse our every plan and constructive step with this intention.

Résumé:
From the end of the fifteenth century to the closing years of the seventeenth, England underwent radical social change. English architecture changed radically as well, and the homes of the gentry were transformed as members of this class grew in numbers, wealth, and importance. This abundantly illustrated book provides for the first time a full account of the houses that were built and inhabited by the upper classes during this rich and fascinating period. Architectural historian Nicholas Cooper explores hundreds of gentry houses, some well known and others far less familiar, and considers their evolution in the light of economic, political, and social changes of the age. The book begins with a discussion of the members of the gentry class, their increasing influence, notions of gentility, and evolving attitudes toward the art of architecture and the craft of building. Cooper then traces changes in the architecture and layout of many specific upper class houses and shows how broader social trends and needs were reflected in such developments as the reception of classicism and the evolution of the new types of plans. This book is a treasury of information about English upper-class houses of 1480 to 1680, and about the attitudes and motives of those who built, owned, and lived in them.
