Every age needs an author of aphorisms. In the words of Douglas Coupland, KNOWING EVERYTHING TURNS OUT TO BE SLIGHTLY BORING, and A LACK OF SHAME IS RESISTANCE. From big data to democracy, his ongoing slogan series presents the topics of our times with bracing, provocative wit and graphic impact. Laid out one per page against a spectrum of solid colors, these statements revisit the work of Jenny Holzer through a 21st-century filter. In just a few words each time, Coupland makes sense of our culture at large. In addition to existing slogans, the book reveals ten exclusive slogans and an original essay by the artist.

Résumé:
Despite the increasing numbers of people who now work from home, in the popular imagination the home is still understood as the sanctuary of privacy and intimacy. Living is conceptually and definitively separated from work. This book argues against such a separation, countering the prevailing ideology of domesticity with a series of architectural projects that illustrate alternative approaches. Less a monograph than a treatise, richly illustrated, the book combines historical research and design proposals to reenvision home as a cooperative structure in which it is possible to live and work and in which labor is socialized beyond the family—freeing inhabitants from the sense of property and the burden of domestic labor.

This is causing many of us to simply withdraw from the public sphere, wandering off into our own private worlds. Those who remain are struggling to maintain the illusion of critical mass. In reality, politics, culture, commerce and social media have all lost heir drive, falling forward on inertia alone. Everyone wants the same thing. We all crave spaciousness. We all feel too close, without any closeness. This issue of “Real Review” is dedicated to the paradoxical sensation of “absolute proximity”.

Art Isn’t Fair is the title of the last video completed in 2012 by Allan Sekula, a work commenting on the rise of art fairs as yet another international gathering of moneyed elites. This new compilation of textual, photographic and filmic essays underscores Sekula’s longstanding engagement with the many intersections between art, photography, and the shifting terrain of power struggles from both a local and international perspective. Bringing together an ensemble of works that Sekula never had the chance to publish together before his death in 2013, this new collection expands our sense of the persistent depth and breadth of Sekula’s concerns and commitments.

This book captures the raw moment of inception behind a designer’s collection. 'Assemblage 6' started off with almost 300 maquettes: chairs, lamps, stools, or daybeds made of wire, cardboard, tape, and canvas, or the everyday materials to be found in Faye Toogood’s studio. Seventeen were chosen to be scaled up to life-size works, and here we have an immersive journey(...)

Seventeen were chosen to be scaled up to life-size works, and here we have an immersive journey through all the original maquettes and their occasional passage into the real world of furniture/sculpture, a book that plays with the sense of dissimulation evident in the final artworks, or the fact that some objects are not always what they seem at first glance.

Résumé:
This publication explores how graphs can serve as maps to guide us when the information we have is ambiguous or incomplete. Using a visually diverse sampling of graphical display, from heartrending autobiographical displays of genocide in the Kovno ghetto to the "Pie Chart of Mystery" in a New Yorker cartoon, Wainer illustrates the many ways graphs can be used - and misused - as we try to make sense of an uncertain world. Picturing the Uncertain World reveals how the visual communication of data offers answers to vexing questions yet also highlights the measure of uncertainty in almost everything we do.

Résumé:
A part of the early 1990s art and graffiti boom associated with San Francisco's Mission School ) and with the Beautiful Loser generation, McGee synthesizes a wide range of resources, including the Mexican muralists, anonymous street art and San Francisco Beat poetry, all of which are notably characterized by a sense of public address that McGee never neglects to convey in his own work. His paintings, drawings and installations spill over with graphic energy and political anger, and direct exhortations to his audience to respond to the life around them. This hardcover artist's book takes the form of a visual collage, incorporating photographs, drawings, paintings and documentation of past and present installations.

Includes 13 texts by a variety of writers that investigate contemporary publishing in its broadest sense, stemming from a New York basement workshop and bookstore in 2006. Résumé:
This publication offers a detailed tour of the key places of the "final migration" and explores the possibilities and pitfalls inherent in the developing new world order. From villages in China, India, Bangladesh and Poland to the international cities of the world, Doug Saunders portrays a diverse group of people as they struggle to make the transition, and in telling the story of their journeys — and the history of their often multi-generational families enmeshed in the struggle of transition — gives an often surprising sense of what factors aid in the creation of a stable, productive community.
