Sophie: Voir la mer

Résumé:
For Voir la mer, Sophie Calle invited inhabitants of Istanbul, who often originated from central Turkey, to see the sea for the first time. "I took 15 people of all ages, from kids to one man in his 80s once we were safely by the sea, I instructed them to take away their hands and look at it. Then, when they were ready--for some it was five minutes and for others 15--they(...)

Then, when they were ready--for some it was five minutes and for others 15--they had to turn to me and let me look at those eyes that had just seen the sea." The project was eventually composed of 14 five-minute videos, made for Calle by Caroline Champetier. Each person is filmed from behind, eventually turning to face the camera, revealing the emotions the experience has evoked.

Résumé:
''Daddy wouldn't buy me a Bauhaus'' collects the writings of legendary British wordsmith Janet Abrams for the first time. From pivotal figures in international modernism to the pioneers of digital medium, Abrams explored the ideas, theories, and emotions that fueled their work. The book's twenty-six profiles, written in Abrams's signature, personal, often hilarious style, include Reyner Banham, Berthold Lubetkin, Philip Johnson, Paul Rand, Phyllis Lambert, Frank Gehry, Rem Koolhaas, Muriel Cooper, April Greiman, and Michael Bloomberg. Many of the profiles are back in print for the first time, having originally appeared in Blueprint, I.D. magazine, the Independent, and in books and catalogs from the 1980s through the early 2000s. A foreword by Blueprint's founding editor, Deyan Sudjic, and new reflections by Abrams set the stage.

Résumé:
Skateboarders are an increasingly common feature of the urban environment - recent estimates total 40 million world-wide. We are all aware of their often extraordinary talent and manoeuvres on the city streets. This book is the first detailed study of the urban phenomenon of skateboarding. It looks at skateboarding history from the surf-beaches of California in the 1950s, through the purpose-built skateparks of the 1970s, to the street-skating of the present day and shows how skateboarders experience and understand the city through their sport. Dismissive of authority and convention, skateboarders suggest that the city is not just a place for working and shopping but a true pleasure-ground, a place where the human body, emotions and energy can be expressed to the full.

Résumé:
Although we spend more than ninety percent of our lives inside buildings, we understand very little about how the built environment affects our behavior, thoughts, emotions, and well-being. We are biological beings whose senses and neural systems have developed over millions of years; it stands to reason that research in the life sciences, particularly neuroscience, can offer compelling insights into the ways our buildings shape our interactions with the world. This expanded understanding can help architects design buildings that support both mind and body. In Mind in Architecture, leading thinkers from architecture and other disciplines, including neuroscience, cognitive science, psychiatry, and philosophy, explore what architecture and neuroscience can learn from each other. They offer historical context, examine the implications for current architectural practice and education, and imagine a neuroscientifically informed architecture of the future.

Résumé:
South Korean artist Haegue Yang (born 1971) uses a wide array of mediums—ranging from paper collage, video essays and performative sculptures to large-scale installations—to create images and experiences in which people, places and things are evocatively linked. Often using ordinary objects in elaborate abstract compositions, Yang's work stages chance encounters between viewers and materials that can generate unexpected forms, emotions and narratives. This publication is a rich, fully illustrated anthology of the most significant writing on Yang's work from 2006 to 2018. Featuring essays and interviews by Lars Bang Larsen, Nicolas Bourriaud, Binna Choi, Doryun Chong, T.J. Demos, Yilmaz Dziewior, Patricia Falguières, Eungie Joo, Tom McDonough, Ute Meta Bauer, Bart van der Heide and Anne M. Wagner, the selection of texts in this volume thoroughly engage the complexity of the artist's work.

There is no escaping landscape: it's everywhere and part of everyone's life. Landscapes have received much less attention in aesthetics than those arts we can choose to ignore, such as painting or music - but they can tell us a lot about the ethical and aesthetic values of the societies that produce them. Drawing examples from a wide range of landscapes from around the world and throughout history, the author considers the ways landscapes can affect our emotions, our imaginations, and our understanding of the passage of time. This publication reveals the enormous design work involved in even the most naturalistic of landscapes, such as Prospect Park in Brooklyn, and the ways in which contemporary landscapes are turning the challenges of the industrial past into opportunities for the future.

Résumé:
An exhibition catalogue from the Migros Museum featuring 21 artists and architects including Anish Kapoor, Jane and Louise Wilson, James Casebere, and Daniel Libeskind among others. The exhibition takes as its point of departure three contexts in which space occupies a central position: Sigmund Freud’s notion of “das Unheimliche” and psychoanalytical elaboration of space and its emotion; Michel Foucault’s other spaces – heterotopias and their counter-site qualities of socio-political implications; and Walter Benjamin’s outmoded and repressed space with all its auratic traces (fake or authentic) of philosophical and historic charge. “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered” aims to exploit the psychological associations of space with its multiplicity of emotional overtones, mapping its extremes and its psychic environment. Focusing on spatial pathologies (agoraphobia, vertigo, claustrophobia...), the exhibition identifies space as a cause of mental disorder, fear or estrangement, ultimate trauma. Hysteria, panic and neurosis overlap with other spatial stories of psychic unrest and unease: distortions and perversions (warped space); anxiety and enigmas (haunted space); spatial inconvenience and discomfort, perfectly domestic and yet alienating; space half-spoken, half-pronounced: a promise, a puzzle, a magic spell, temptation.
