Whether it's design, interiors or architecture, the client list for the Swedish firm Sandell Sandberg reads like a roster of the world's edgiest companies, including B Italia, Artimide, Ericsson, Electrolux and IKEA. This first-ever comprehensive book about the firm, established in 1995, shows off the powerful, idiosyncratic sense of form that has placed principal Thomas Sandell at the forefront of the international architecture and design scene. Sandell's playful approach characterizes projects ranging from IKEA lamps or vacation retreats that look like they were designed for modernist trolls, to housing for the underprivileged in suburban communities. A substantial book on a designer whose influence will only grow with the decades.

Résumé:
Over the past twenty years, the network has come to dominate the art world, affecting not just interaction among art professionals but the very makeup of the art object itself. The hierarchical and restrictive structure of the museum has been replaced by temporary projects scattered across the globe, staffed by free agents hired on short-term contracts, viewed by spectators defined by their predisposition to participate and make connections. In this book, Lane Relyea tries to make sense of these changes, describing a general organizational shift in the art world that affects not only material infrastructures but also conceptual categories and the construction of meaning.

Urban Smellscapes makes a notable contribution towards the growing body of literature on the senses and design by providing some answers to these questions and contributing towards the wider research agenda regarding how people sensually experience urban environments.

Résumé:
Photographer Takashi Homma takes us on a journey deep into densely wooded areas in search of the many different types of fungus that grow there. More the collection of a curious wanderer than a serious hobbyist, the unidentified mushrooms are photographed against sterile white backgrounds as if recently plucked from the forest floor, with soil, bark and even small creatures still attached. The fungal portraits are interspersed with images of the forest itself, as if providing a natural context – a sense of actually being there – with surroundings of lichen covered trees, dense leafage, and the natural interplay of shadow and light.

Résumé:
There are infinitive ways to build a community, yet the defining feature of any community is characteristically the landscape. Whether it is a park, a river corridor, community gardens, a plaza or a streetscape, the public spaces where people interact provide a shared sense of ownership. In a systematic overview, following the workflow sequences of open space projects, the author explores the various types and levels of intervention: from master planning to guerrilla gardening and from land reclamation to building in existing fabric. The emphasis is on strategies of interaction between landscape projects, building development, and urban planning, resulting in neighbourhoods and city quarters that offer a higher quality of life.

Résumé:
In architecture, as in food, local is an idea whose time has come. Of course, the idea of an architecture that responds to site; draws on local building traditions, materials, and crafts; and strives to create a sense of community is not new. Yet, the way it has evolved in the past few years is indeed defining a new movement. From the rammed-earth houses of Rick Joy and Pacific Northwest timber houses of Tom Kundig, to the community-built structures of Rural Studio and Francis Kere, designers everywhere are championing an architecture that exists from, in, and for a specific place.

Résumé:
Preserved buildings and historic districts, museums and reconstructions have become an important part of the landscape of cities around the world. Beginning in the 1970s, Tokyo participated in this trend. However, repeated destruction and rapid redevelopment left the city with little building stock of recognized historical value. Late twentieth-century Tokyo thus presents an illuminating case of the emergence of a new sense of history in the city’s physical environment, since it required both a shift in perceptions of value and a search for history in the margins and interstices of a rapidly modernizing cityscape.

No one lives in the houses on Hasselwerder Strasse in Neuenfelde. A symptom of the threat from the nearby Airbus factory and its airport, which recently extended its runway towards the town, it raises questions of the community’s survival. Fearing lawsuits from residents, the government purchased more than 60 homes on the approach path. Roger Eberhard captures the resulting, eerie emptiness in this series of 34 photographs of houses and trees. The homes stand clean and intact, the trees look healthy, but behind this facade lies a certain discomfort, a sense that something is wrong. Includes a 140-cm-long foldout and an essay by Stefanie Gerke.

Résumé:
In Buildings Must Die, Stephen Cairns and Jane Jacobs look awry at core architectural concerns. They examine spalling concrete and creeping rust, contemplate ruins old and new, and pick through the rubble of earthquake-shattered churches, imploded housing projects, and demolished Brutalist office buildings. Their investigation of the death of buildings reorders architectural notions of creativity, reshapes architecture’s preoccupation with good form, loosens its vanities of durability, and expands its sense of value. It does so not to kill off architecture as we know it, but to rethink its agency and its capacity to make worlds differently.
