Résumé:
"Village" is Swedish artists Klara Källström and Thobias Fäldt's look at the ambiguous links between Quebec, Canadian, and First Nations cultures. The book presents a series of photographs taken along the artists' multiple peregrinations in Quebec and Ontario, from Gaspé to Toronto, by way of Chicoutimi and Quebec City, as Källström and Fäldt approach the different cultural, linguistic and political realities of these places with humour and criticality.

Painter Christopher Wool has written, "Some of the best stand-up performance I ever saw was Martin [Kippenberger] telling jokes in the back of some bar or restaurant." Which is not to dismiss the legendary German artist, who was at the forefront of the much-storied Cologne art scene of the early 1990s--Kippenberger, who died in 1997, used humor like a laser, to illuminate power structures and taboos. One of the most important artists of the twentieth century, he not only worked in a variety of media--painting, sculpture, books and multiples--but, taking a cue from Joseph Beuys, actively tried to conceive new possibilities on which to model an art practice. This volume, published for an exhibition at Austria's acclaimed Kunsthaus Graz, includes incisive essays by curator and critic Daniel Birnbaum and linguist and writer Martin Prinzhorn, which examine the softer, more utopian side of the artist.

Résumé:
An isolated institute laid out in a Fibonacci sequence, hidden deep in the forest. Twenty-four labs. Twenty-four researchers. Until one of them disappears . . . When physicist Stéphane Douasy arrives to occupy the vacant twenty-fourth lab at the Institute for the Study of Complex and Dynamic Systems, an ominous problem rises in his wake: what has happened to his missing neighbor in Building F? When Stéphane’s neighbors, a discouraged linguist and a computer scientist bent on predicting the future, discover that the missing researcher may have solved the P versus NP problem—a coup in computer science with revolutionary implications for everything from mathematics to philosophy—before vanishing, things turn stranger still, and even more menacing. Solving the mystery of the Institute and its devolution into mayhem and violence every seventh year quickly shifts from being an intellectual exercise to a matter of life and death. ''The phantom scientist'' is part thriller, part mystery, part systems theory—and all enthralling. The tale slyly draws together linguistics, biology, astrophysics, and robotics in a mind-bending puzzle that will thrill and inform readers.

Résumé:
The Tree of Meaning is a collection of thirteen lectures given by internationally-renowned poet, linguist and typographer Robert Bringhurst. Together these lectures present a superbly grounded approach to the study of language, focusing on storytelling, mythology, comparative literature, humanity and the breadth of oral culture. Bringhurst’s commitment to what he calls ‘ecological linguistics’ emerges in his studies of Native American art and storytelling, his understanding of poetry, and his championing of a more truly universal conception of what constitutes literature. The collection features a sustained focus on Haida culture (including the work of storytellers Skaay and Ghandl, and artist Bill Reid), on the process of translation, and on the relationship between beings and language. Spanning ten years of lecturing, The Tree of Meaning is remarkable not only for the cohesion of its author’s own ideas but for the synthesis of such wide-ranging perspectives and examples of cultures both human and non-human. These thirteen lectures draw together a highly personalized and active study of Native American art and literature, world languages, philosophy and natural history. To each subject Bringhurst brings an ecologically conscious, humanitarian approach and an enthusiastic interest in the world around him.
