Résumé:
Portable Property examines how culture-bearing objects came to stand for distant people and places, creating or preserving a sense of self and community despite geographic dislocation. Victorian novels--because they themselves came to be understood as the quintessential portable property--tell the story of this change most clearly. Plotz analyzes a wide range of works, paying particular attention to George Eliot's Daniel Deronda, Anthony Trollope's Eustace Diamonds, and R. D. Blackmore's Lorna Doone. He also discusses Thomas Hardy and William Morris's vehement attack on the very notion of cultural portability. The result is a richer understanding of the role of objects in British culture at home and abroad during the Age of Empire.

Résumé:
James Carpenter is an artist and sculptor whose work focuses on developing new glass and material technologies. His interest in architecture has evolved into a unique design practice that ranges from technical glass and materials consulting to designing curtain walls, roofing systems, bridges, and sculptures. In "James Carpenter: environmental refractions", the artist's first monograph, author Sandro Marpillero explores the unique opportunities afforded by the transparency, reflectivity, and compressive strength of glass. With over 300 images, this book brings to light the work of an exciting designer crossing the boundaries between architecture, engineering, and fine arts. James Carpenter Design Associates, founded in 1978, has worked collaboratively with architects and engineers in the United States and abroad—including Norman Foster, Richard Meier, SOM, and Michael Van Valkenburgh — creating the artistic complement to many significant buildings. James Carpenter, in collaboration with Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum, have been chosen to design and build an undulating glass dome for the new Penn Station.

It is impossible to imagine Austrian architecture and contemporary history without Karl Schwanzer, who would have marked his hundredth birthday in 2018. His buildings, like the BMW administration building in Munich, caused quite a furor domestically and abroad; his institute at the Technical University of Vienna influenced offices like Coop Himmelb(l)au, Haus-Rucker-Co, Missing Link and ZUEND-UP. Posthumously, Schwanzer rose to cult status among his staff, students and clients, conferred especially for his passionate way of working, sparing no effort or expense, and for his relentless search for the optimum solution. In every sense, his life and work were unconventional. The idea to relate them in the form of a graphic novel is also quite unconventional, but certainly a logical consequence!

Résumé:
The construction and design of school buildings in Germany faces major challenges. Particularly in metropolitan areas, student numbers are continuously rising and, according to all forecasts, population growth is set to continue in the coming years. This is why new school buildings, including extensions and renovations of existing school buildings, are one of the central topics of investment policy throughout Germany today. Approximately 5.5 billion euros will be spent from 2017 to 2026 on the refurbishment and/or expansion of existing schools; about 40 new school buildings will be erected. Against this backdrop, the exhibition initiated and curated by Beate Engelhorn at Aedes Architecture Forum presents 12 contemporary school buildings in Europe that are exemplary for the implementation of current educational and urban planning models. The exhibition will be introduced by a two-day conference with numerous contributions from experts from Germany and abroad.

Résumé:
How can the public library fulfil its classic social mission in our individualized and sometimes fragmented society? And how does such a library fit into the urban public space, in which commerce and consumption seem to reign supreme? This requires innovative architecture, the strength of imagination and the willingness to think countercyclically. In this book, librarians Rob Bruijnzeels and Joyce Sternheim examine the most important transitions in public library work. They speak with experts and Dutch and Flemish top architects who have designed public libraries in the Netherlands and abroad. These conversations and the authors’ own insights and experiences have resulted in a new perspective on contemporary library work that has been translated into starting points for the future architecture of public libraries.

Résumé:
In 1975, a small group of enterprising, discontented members of Quebec's art community posed the question: "What do we know about contemporary art outside of Quebec, in Canada or abroad? Do we know what contemporary art exists in Montreal? How does information about art circulate?" By way of an answer, the artistically unconventional and theoretically cutting-edge magazine Parachute was launched, founded by Chantal Pontbriand and France Morin. Artists such as Jeff Wall, Bill Viola, Stan Douglas, Eija-Liisa Ahtila and many others had the first significant critical reception of their work in Parachute. Similarly, figures such as Douglas Crimp, Thomas Crow, Thierry de Duve, Georges Didi-Huberman, Hal Foster, Reesa Greenberg, Serge Guilbaut and Laura Mulvey published highly pertinent essays in the journal early on in their careers. The essays collected in this volume have been selected from the first 25 years of Parachute's publication history, from 1975 to 2000.

Résumé:
The House of Switzerland is a mobile building that serves as the official visitors’ center for Switzerland at major international events. Following its debut at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the building went on to serve events in Zurich, Milan, and Rio de Janeiro. This book takes a close look at the architectural and design challenges presented by a building that has to be mobile, accessible, and visually striking. Drawing on materials from the planning process conducted by Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and the architectural firm Spillmann Echsle Architects, which built the house together with Ortreport scenographers, the book presents a dictionary of all elements in the building set for the house, illustrated with images and plans rendered with rich technical detail. A discussion between the key figures involved in the project rounds out the book, exploring the process of creating such an iconic representation of a nation abroad.

Résumé:
With its Alpine peaks, crystalline lakes, and efficient cities, Switzerland has quietly become a center for sophisticated late modern architecture. Architect Peter Zumthor, a former cabinetmaker, and the firm Herzog & de Meuron produced a series of buildings at home and abroad that has paved the way for a younger generation of architects who fuse the country’s traditional materials with high-tech new tools and innovative construction methods. This book goes beyond the standard project-based survey, documenting the most important buildings of the last decade through architectural photographs that highlight the detail, volumetric play, and material experimentation of the buildings and portray them in the unique environments in which they have been designed and built.
