Résumé:
Over the years Herman Hertzberger has made a great many theatre designs for sites both in the Netherlands and abroad. They are presented here together for the first time in book-form. In a long interview with Arthur Wortmann the architect explains what designing theatres means to him. Armed with many examples from his own work and the work of others, he describes how a theatre ought to slip into its urban surroundings, the considerations that obtain when designing the auditoria and the secret of a good foyer. Hertzberger explains that theatres in fact should blend into the city. He calls for polyvalency instead of flexibility and stresses the need to articulate space so that there is always plenty to see.

Résumé:
The image of the “land” is an ongoing trope in conceptions of Canada—from the national anthem and the flag to the symbols on coins—the land and nature remain linked to the Canadian sense of belonging and to the image of the nation abroad. Linguistic landscapes reflect the multi-faceted identities and cultural richness of the nations. Earlier portrayals of the land focused on unspoiled landscape, depicted in the paintings of the Group of Seven, for example. Contemporary notions of identity, belonging, and citizenship are established, contested, and legitimized within sites and institutions of public culture, heritage, and representation that reflect integration with the land, transforming landscape into landmarks. This collection includes essays by Canadian and international scholars whose engagement with the theme stems from their disciplinary perspectives as well as from their personal and professional experience—rooted, at least partially, in their own sense of national identity and in their relationship to Canada.

Résumé:
A concise introduction to the pioneering formal and social innovations of the Neoconcretist and Tropicália protagonist. Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica’s oeuvre remains an indisputable influence on all aspects of avant-garde culture in his home country and abroad, from visual art to music, theater, literature and beyond. This volume demonstrates the numerous ways in which Oiticica’s work explored and expanded formal artistic modes, pushing past the boundaries of color and structure. Oiticica prioritized the inclusive and participatory possibilities of art, represented through his forays into environmental art and interactive installation. Large-scale projects such as his monumental installation Tropicália (1966–67), which satirizes the idea of Brazil as a tropical paradise, are documented alongside his works on paper and textile pieces. The text traces the evolution of Oiticica’s multidisciplinary practice and underlines the cosmological ideas that guided his approach to art and life, demonstrating the profound impact Oiticica's ideas had on the wider art world, both past and present.

Résumé:
How and why Palladio has become the most influential architect of the Renaissance and beyond. For more than four and a half centuries, his works have continuously provided a touchstone for architects, not only in the Veneto, where architects were able to scrutinize his works firsthand, but abroad as well. Indeed, his followers are legion; however, the manner in which his oeuvre has been interpreted varied considerably according to time and place. His successors have ranged from those advocating a return to classical orthodoxy to those who have sought to borrow from his work more freely. Yet as the call for architectural reform grew ever more urgent over the course of the eighteenth century, this polysemy came to be overshadowed by a rationalized classical interpretation of Palladio's work.

Résumé:
The export of American architecture began in the nineteenth century as a disjointed set of personal adventures and commercial initiatives. It continues today alongside the transfer of other aspects of American life and culture to most regions of the world. Jeffrey Cody explains how, why and where American architects, planners, building contractors and other actors have marketed American architecture overseas. In so doing he provides a historical perspective on the diffusion of American building technologies, architectural standards, construction methods and planning paradigms. Using previously undocumented examples and illustrations, he shows how steel-frame manufacturers shipped their products abroad enabling the erection of American-style skyscrapers worldwide by 1900 and how this phase was followed by similar initiatives by companies manufacturing concrete components.

Résumé:
Many schools have to contend with the tension between an inflexible building and constantly changing requirements for use. With this in mind, WiMBY! (Welcome into My Backyard!, a Rotterdam-based organization for revitalizing post-war housing areas) commissioned three designers to develop "SchoolParasites" as an attractive alternative to the usual trailer-type provisional classrooms. "SchoolParasites" are provisional structures, flexible in application and striking in design; the first three were erected in the Rotterdam suburb of Hoogvliet in spring 2004. The aim of the program is to put these models into production and to make them available to every school in the Netherlands and abroad. Not the Trailer documents the designs of Barend Koolhaas, Onix, and Christoph Seyferth. It also considers far-reaching questions on the interaction of education and architecture, on the inventiveness of the schools themselves, on permanence and temporariness, and on how intelligent, flexible solutions can play a role in the restructuring of post-war urban areas.

Last 2007 La Casa Encendida organised the Sueño de Casa Propia (Dream of a Home of One’s Own) exhibition, curated by María Inés Rodríguez, in which a series of reflections on housing by artists, designers and architects served as the basis for an analysis of how different contexts produce different strategies for resolving the issue of access to housing. Parallel to the exhibition, a seminar entitled Housing and Domestic Space in the 21st Century was organised. Coordinated by Juan Herreros, an architect and lecturer at the Madrid University School of Architecture, the seminar brought together a group of intellectuals from both Spain and abroad for discussions on this theme. The ultimate aim of the seminar was to raise awareness about architecture’s potential role in the current and evident transformation of lifestyles. With the collaboration of: Raúl Cárdenas, María Auxiliadora Gálvez, Vicente Guallart, Hans-Walter Müller, Philippe Rahm, Alejandro Aravena, Robert Kronenburg, Colin Davies and Enric Ruiz-Geli.

Résumé:
Danish designers are renowned around the world for their beautiful and functional chairs. This substantial new book tells the full story of the Danish chairs that were created during the 20th century. “The Danish Chair: An International Affair” is structured around chair types and illustrates how the “golden age” of Danish furniture design was driven by the study and refinement of historical furniture types, including chairs from abroad that served as important sources of inspiration. It traces the family relations between the chairs and shows how they influenced each other in terms of detailing, construction and concept. Design was the cultural phenomenon that put Denmark on the world map in the mid-20th century. The international brand of Danish design arose in 1949 when American journalists began to write about the Danish furniture at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition.

Résumé:
In the 1920s, an unprecedented program of architectural and cultural renewal was established in the German city of Frankfurt am Main. This scheme became inscribed in cultural history under the name ''The New Frankfurt.'' As part of the housing and urban development initiative decided in 1925, more than 10,000 new residential units were planned. The Building Ministry’s architects, recruited from home and abroad, created pioneering work in many areas. Examples include the typification of family-oriented flats, plans for affordable apartments for those on low incomes, the first standard kitchen, the industrial prefabrication of building shells, the construction of schools designed around children’s needs, and integrated urban and green planning. In this book, four essays delve into the cultural background of the scheme and provide illuminating insights into the context of the work of its many actors.

Résumé:
The church of San Marco of Venice has long played a central role in Venetian political, ceremonial, and religious life. Its renowned assemblage of mosaics, sculpture, metalwork, and reliquaries are, in origin, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, or Venetian imitation of Byzantine designs. In San Marco, Byzantium, and the Myths of Venice, the authors assess the significance of the embellishment of the church and its immediate surroundings, especially during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries, when most of the Byzantine material was acquired, largely from Constantinople. The church and its decoration are studied in relation to Venice’s interests abroad and on mainland Italy. The authors address the diverse styles, sources, meanings, and significance of this art, both individually and as an ensemble. Building upon developments in scholarship since Otto Demus’s masterly studies of the church, the book offers new insights into the inspiration, purposes, and mutability of San Marco and the myths that inspired and motivated Venetians.
